Someone mentioned Jaffa Cakes in a recent post about universally adored foods, and I suddenly found myself craving some. I knew of a place near my hometown that sold such foods (Shepherds Pies of Scotland in Timonium, MD), but I’ve since moved to Alexandria, VA and I don’t know of any ones nearby.
Are there any locals who might know where I can get some imported British goodies?
If no-one comes up with a better suggestion, and you’re really desperate, you might try the British Corner Shop which should be able to satisfy all your junk food needs.
Some areas of the country have some sort of British foods store. I did a Google search for ones in the Washington DC area, and came up with Chadwicks’ in Annapolis, but there may be others closer to you, especially given the number of expats in the DC area.
And another search for the Alexandria area comes up with The British Connection on South Royal Street.
I feel sheepish for not trying a Google Maps search myself. I wasn’t sure it would yield anything useful.
As for the junk food factor, I’ve only had true Jaffa Cakes once (though I’ve had Pimm’s a few times), so they are in my mind as an occasional junk food (partly because of the fact that if I had a steady supply of them, I’d probably eat them with every meal).
I bet if you called Her Majesty’s Embassy in DC and politely explained who you were and how you craved a taste of that “scepter’d isle,” a Public Affairs staffer could steer you in the right direction.
Have you tried looking in a World Market? I’m pretty sure that’s the name of the store anyway. They have a lot of stuff like that from Europe. There’s a few around, though the only one I know of for sure is in Germantown. I do know of a shop in Frederick, MD, but that’s a hike, and he tends to sell stuff way over priced and a bit stale.
Never heard of 'em! But, I just did a Google Maps search for one and it turns out there’s one in Falls Church, 8 minutes from my apartment. Sweet. I’ll check it out tonight if they’re open. I’ll try the British Connection later in the week (they close early).
I don’t see how Whole Foods is over priced. Yes some things are more expensive then other stores, but other things are cheaper. I can get better pasta, beans, rice, things like that cheaper, while milk and cereal are about the same. The only thing I can think of that’s a lot more is the meat, but even that’s not a huge difference. Maybe it’s just the other stores around here, but Whole Foods for us tends to be the easier and cheaper option.
You might find a section in a certain grocery store or specialty foods store dedicated to this sort of thing. I can find Cadbury’s et al at the local HEB, my father buys his at Fiesta. Completely depends on the individual store.
If you think Whole Foods is overpriced, take a look at the English candy bars in World Market.
