Although the original Death Valley is in California, I know of at least three other places that have been given that nickname: Left Center field at the old Yankee Stadium, the stadium for Clemson football games and the stadium for LSU football games. Are there any others? This is not necessarily restricted to sports.
My uncle always called Sun City, Arizona “Death Valley.”
Clemson stadium got that name because they have a rock that came from Death Valley, CA. The team touches the rock before each game.
For the record, the original nickname for the LSU is “Deaf Valley”, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Clemson’s stadium nickname and to the ridiculous amount of noise Tiger fans were known to generate there. Of course, subtle vocal distinctions like “Death” and “Deaf” can become lost when you’ve been hanging out in the sort of place people would nickname “Deaf Valley”, so it was probably inevitable that people would screw it up.
I had no idea about this. Thanks for the info!
Other way around. A Clemson grad gave Howard the rock because of the nickname.
