Thank you for the idea, really. We were planning on watching Odyssey with my mother in law on Sunday, but all of the IMAX viewings are sold out (except the front rows). I think O’ Brother this Sunday, and then Odyssey next weekend, when there are good seats left at just one afternoon showing on an IMAX screen near me.
For a non-film buff person, am I going to really care about the difference between 70mm IMAX and digital/LASER IMAX? One of the magic 25 theaters is near enough to me I can go (there are some good seats still available for the 10:40pm show on Wednesday the 29th, but the 8am weekend shows only have the front row left!).
There are also 3 different theaters within 5 miles that have regular digital IMAX. One of them also has 70mm projection on non-IMAX. Is that really the second best choice, even though the image is cropped? I’m extremely suspicious of arguments about resolution, because not only is there “good enough”, there is also “too good”. It will take me out of the movie when I can see the actors wearing pancake makeup. Plus, at least two of our group are lucky to be 20/30 with corrective lenses.
Yeah, in Nolan’s first IMAX film, he didn’t quite realize how obvious makeup would look on the giant screen.
But seriously, I think even a non-film buff can tell the difference between IMAX film, which has a resolution estimated at between 16 and 18K, and IMAX GT Laser, which is maybe a little better than 4K.
If you have the opportunity, I recommend IMAX film.
Nolan knows better than any fillmaker living how his images will appear on screen and wouldn’t make a rookie mistake like you suggested. Also, he has shot and edited the film with all the various aspect ratios in mind. I’m tempted to see the standard 70mm version after I see the IMAX one just to compare the experiences.
Of course, if you really want to be sure, go to screenings in IMAX film, standard 70mm, IMAX GT Laser, IMAX digital, Dolby Cinema, 35mm film, and standard digital. You know, science! Then report back to us.
That seems like too much trouble, and now I have hit choice overload. I’ll just get the DVD at the library in a few months and watch it in 480p on my 10" ipad. While doing the dishes.
We were just talking about Argus today. We had our dog boarded for 11 days back in June, and it may have seemed like 20 years to him. He didn’t have to lie on a manure pile, though.
I saw it today, in a digital IMAX theater and enjoyed it. It’s not as if I was sitting there disappointed, thinking “Damn. This would be so much better on 70mm film IMAX.”
Just got back from a 70mm IMAX showing at Lincoln Square and wow! Epic! Really happy to have seen it on the biggest screen in the country. They gave out free posters as I walked in too.
Saw it. Really enjoyed it but kind of wish it was split into two movies. Him leaving Calypso would be a natural end point and they could back load some of his son’s adventures into the second half to fill it out. I was feeling the length of it by the end so it did not hit as well as it could have.
I enjoyed it and I’ll be the first to say it, at least 'round here: It will win the Best Picture Oscar. I’m not saying it should win, just that it will.
Anyway, this is the loudest movie I’ve ever experienced, to the point of being uncomfortable. In fact, it may be the loudest experience I’ve ever experienced (and I’ve seen Deep Purple and ZZ Top).
My question is whether it matter since the screens are so much smaller. Will I be able to see that detail or will a regular screen only show me 4k or less level of detail?
By the calculations I did, I would not be able to see the difference at the six-story IMAX if I sat around 60 ft away.
Is the Horse featured in this film? I honestly don’t know. If so, did they make it plausible? I’ve always thought the story is iconic and dramatic and everything, but plausibility when it came to a giant wooden horse went out the window.
I went in with almost no expectations. Ended up liking it a lot. It will be on my top 10 at the end of the year. I was blown away with segments of it. The cyclops sequence was terrific, as was the Samantha Morton scenes where she pulled their faces and so forth.
One review I read described the horse as “elegant and massive — posed on its hind legs, it looks fashioned from the ribs of ship.” I didn’t see the ships’ ribs as clearly as the Trojan Horse in the movie Troy. That one was more obviously made from the pieces of their ships.
