Planescape Torment crashes regularily

As I cleaned my desk a week ago (read reshuffled the stacks of stuff) I found my Torment CDs again and decided to give it another go on the weekend. Unfortunally the game crashes every 20 minutes taking the whole computer down with it, I strongly suspect its Windows XPs fault (it’s always that way isn’t it?)

The official site was nicely bare of anything that could even remotely been seen as a help section (or even a download area for patches), and all I could pull from fan sites was that someone suffered from the same phenomenon (with Win XP as OS the circle of suspects narrows).

So help me Dopers, what can change the nature of these crashes? You are my final hope.

I had exactly the same problem on Windows 98. Never got rid of them entirely, but I had fewer problems later in the game. I also found that saving regularly and closing all extra programs in Windows helps.

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode? Sometimes that works, though it could just be Planescape not wanting to work. I’ve found even older games seem to be more stable on XP, but that certainly doesn’t rule out the OS causing the crashes.

Only thing I can really offer is making sure every driver you have is updated, especially your sound drivers, as those are what usually cause game crashes.

I knew I forgot something, compatibility mode does nothing, bhut thanks for pointing it out, updating my soundcard drivers now, hope that helps.

Thanks for the answers.

It wasn’t clear from your post whether you were able to get the patch.

I’ve played it in 98 and ME for hours and hours on end with no trouble, which, of course, means absolutely nothing.

But definitely patch it, if you haven’t.

Thanks again (I still had a copy of the patch on a CD) the updated soundcard drivers have helped, I played for 3 hours without a crash.
