Very specific game question

Ok, hands up who’s played Planescape: Torment?

Good game, isn’t it?

BUT! It keeps freezing on my computer. It’s fine in game until I first leave the mortuary (if you’ve played it you’ll know what I mean) and then after about five minutes, the game freezes, the sounds starts looping, and I have to hard boot to get the computer back.

What’s odd, is that the game itself (same CD’s) has run fine on every other computer I’ve played it on, which is 6 (thanks to me moving around a lot and loving the game). It’s only my computer that it screws up on. And it’s only the one game too, no other game freezes like this, even other games based on the same engine (Icewind Dale, Baldur’s gate, etc).

I’ve already played and finished it on another computer but it’s a game that I’d really like to replay.

Anyone have any thoughts on why only the one game will freeze on only the one computer? I’ve tried interplay tech support but they were pretty useless, offering me nothing more than the usual reinstall, reboot, blah blah blah stuff.

Oh yeah, the computer it freezes on is a p3 733, 256 meg RAM Win98. The other comps it’s ran fine on are everything from a amd k6 233 w win95 to a p3 600 running win nt.

Are you running on a Via motherboard? Some PCs that ran 133MHz SDRAM on a Via motherboard would lock up hard when P:T got to any cutscene movie. There was a BIOS setting you could tweak – I can’t remember it now, but it is documented on the Interplay web site somewhere – that would work around the problem, but only old versions of the BIOS would allow you to change the setting.

I got around it by disabling the movies.

I’m running an Intel motherboard (815).

The movies run fine, what happens is that around 5 mins after I exit the mortuary, regardless of what I do (like, I can stand and do nothing, or go on playing the game) the whole thing freezes.

But hey, while we’re on movies, all the reviews of the game reference a button on the startup screen (along with new life, resume life) labeled “experiance a vision” that lets you view movies. Um, mine doesn’t have that button. What gives?

This is probably the longest bump the board’s had for a while, but I recently got disc 3 burnt for me (I lost it somewhere in PNG), want to play it again, and never really got an answer. Hopefully someone will see this, if not I’ll get a mod to change the title and try one more time. And if not after that… wait till I get a new comp till I replay it again I guess.

      • You’d probably best off looking for tech support forums at the publisher’s site for that specific game, or newsgroups concerned with that specific game.

Problem with that is that it’s an old and not that popular game.

Might be at gamefaqs.com they do al games all systems .

Nope. Somebody bumped a thread from last August a couple of days ago.
