I like the go karts. Each of the racers has a different personality so they don’t just robotically follow the same line - it actually looks like individual people racing around your track which makes it more unique from run to run compared to something like a coaster.
So glad to see them release two robust (and free) updates, rather than putting out an expansion pack every month like The Sims. Perhaps its because they knew the game was a bit lacking upon release, but either way, I’m really enjoying the new content. Hope there is more to come!
Oh, and thanks for the update to this thread! I hadn’t played for a while and didn’t realize they had released it already.
So I did 97% of a go kart track in time for the contest, didn’t win, and promptly got lazy and let it sit for 3 weeks instead of finishing it, which I should’ve done.
It has a similar theme to my river rapids and I re-used some scenery like the skull waterfall and the town square area, but most of it is new and refined. I really like working with the go karts because with the racing AI it ends up looking unique every run. I think I may design more of them.
Instructions on creating the pathing and water are in the workshop description, unfortunately those won’t copy as part of blueprints. It’s pretty simple.
Rate/favorite it if you like it if you don’t mind. If you happen to use it in one of your parks, post a screenshot I’d love to see my work being used. My river rapids got up to 1200 subscribers, but hardly any feedback other than a dozen or so upratings. I think the feedback makes it place more prominently in the workshop, leading to more people seeing it.
I think I may have erred by launching it at a weird time. It only got 20 views all day, and will probably be buried at the bottom of the workshop never to be seen again. So I took it down for now, and I’m going to make some refinements and re-launch it sometime later in the week. The video is still up, but I’ll post another workshop link later with the tweaked version.
I could use naming suggestions. I didn’t want it to be too generic like “pirate [something] karts” but I couldn’t come up with a good one. I wanted the name to reflect that the race goes through the middle of the battle, or that it’s on a pirate island under siege, or something like that, but I’m bad with names.
I subscribed, I’ve been playing a bit more recently, although I’m only using the basic included rides so far - building my own stuff seems more trouble than it’s worth.
Planet Coaster just released a pretty big expansion pack yesterday. Spooky Pack is their first paid expansion for the series after two freebies (Christmas and Summer). It is priced at a reasonable $11.99 US, which is a heck of a lot cheaper than those Sims expansion packs. For the money, you get two new dark rides, a coaster, and a boatload of spooky objects (over 200). Like their other expansions, the quality is top notch.
With all of the expansion packs, they seemed to have plugged all of the glaring holes of the original game. Sure, they could still use more rides, but the have succeeded in creating a true amazing theme park simulator.
Would anyone be interested in a co-op park? What I mean is that we’d all subscribe to the same workshop item and one person at a time could add on to our park. We’d collaboratively fill the park out. People could design major rides or just add little scenery items or design a food court or whatever they felt like working on. We’d all have to become friends on steam to make sure no one else is working on the project while we wanted to (I assume competing saves would overwrite each other) but other than that people could just work on as little or as much as they wanted whenever.
My one proposal would be that we use things that we created ourselves entirely. No grabbing pre-made stuff from the workshop - it’d be fun to have a park that was 100% ours. You could re-use pieces you’ve already designed for other parks, but everything would be original to us.
The new update has some very cool features. The staffing appears complicated on the surface, but I shouldn’t comment until I actually try playing with it. There is one new feature - the ability to change the background image on your biome - that is supposedly included in the update, but I’ve looked everywhere and can’t figure out how to do it. If anyone discovers how, I’d be much obliged.
I just bought the game on special from Steam. Without rehashing my tale of woe regarding my computer, I’ll wrap it all up by saying … I got a new computer - with a kick-ass video card. First thing I did was load up Cities Skyline and I was finally able to play it as it was meant to be played. It was like a new game. I loved it. I mention it because, as Cities Skyline is to Sim City, Planet Coaster is to Roller Coaster Tycoon. All that, “wouldn’t it be cool if you could” shit is taken care of and the graphics are amazing.
I just wanted to blurt that all out. I’m loving this game so far even though my design skills so far are like finger painting compared to the Mona Lisa up against the amazing stuff I’m seeing on YouTube and the parks I’m downloading from the Workshop. I’ve yet to even complete a full coaster design on my own. I’ve spent the majority of my time trying to figure out realistic looking pathing and decor - and failing pretty hard so far; but, dribs and drabs.
Okay. My opinion of this game is rapidly changing. It’s fucking impossible to get the simplest things done. The pathing functions are completely unintuitive and it’s next to impossible to snake queues into some of these blueprint rides.
My biggest problem so far is with railroad stations. Here’s the thing … I’m not Michaelangelo. I’m not going to be sitting around pouring a hundred hours into designing my own depots; that’s what I’ve got Steam’s Workshop for. Why the hell can’t I connect two blueprint stations to each other? It makes no sense. I’ve searched high and low for some option that will allow me to place two stations and then link them with track - as one would think you could easily fucking do ferchrissakes! - but no luck.
Can somebody throw me a bone before I fling my laptop against the wall.
If you haven’t already, I recommend looking at some the tutorials on Youtube regarding paths. I don’t know if we can post links here but they are easy enough to find. I found some of them very helpful. As far as the station issue, I haven’t worked with the trains in the game yet, but I do know that if there is an auto-complete option available, it can save you from pulling your hair out sometimes.
Edited to add: There is a tutorial on youtube for adding multiple train stations as well.
I have looked at a few tutorials. Generally, the advice offered exceeds my ability to pull it off, but that’s on me. I did look up the thing about train stations and apparently it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. It’s apparently not an uncommon question on Planet Coaster boards here and there.
Placing one blue print station creates one ride; plopping another blueprint station creates a second ride and never the twain shall meet. The only way to pull it off (unless they debug this) is to place your second blue print station somewhere where you don’t really want it as a place holder. Then you lay your tracks and when you get to where you want your second station to be, you use the construction feature to create the loading station section. Then you have to go back to your blue print - delete the station section in that plan and then move the entire blue print (easier said than done if there are a lot of details to it) over the station you just created - with precision or it will look like shit.
They need to fix that. If my RC3 chops are to carry over I rely heavily on transport rides. This definitely knocks the game down a bit for me.
The new Adventure Pack DLC is available for $10.99 on Steam. Lots of content in this one including two boat rides, ala Disney’s Jungle Cruise. Also, pretty much any object you can think of to create an Indiana Jones type ride. (This game appears to really be catering to the Disney crowd, which is probably wise). The content is all high quality stuff and includes snakes, planes, waterfalls, lava, rolling boulders, etc.
Game is $11.24 on steam during the winter sale which is remarkably cheap, anyone still thinking about it should pick it up for this price.
I’m disappointed with these little content packs - I would gladly pay $20 for decent sized expansions, like a water park expansion, similar to what previous RCT games have done.
I don’t know. They’ve already given us three free content updates (spring, summer and winter packs) and two that cost $10 each (spooky and adventure). That’s a significant amount of additional content for $20. I wouldn’t mind a water park expansion either, but the paid content is well worth it, in my opinion.
Checking in as a new player. My wife and I bought this for Christmas and have been playing every evening this week. We’re not (yet) into coaster design, but are enjoying working our way through the scenarios thus far. We both had very brief exposure to RCT oh-so-many years ago, which is how we came around to buying this through the Steam sale.
I did not expect to enjoy this nearly as much as I am. We haven’t failed a career scenario yet (we’re still in the “Easy” realm after conquering the “Beginner” trials), but with each successive triumph, we’ve also learned a lot about how not to be so stupid in our park design and operation. There have been a lot of “Oh, THAT’S how you do that!” moments. And only minimal bickering when it comes to deciding on a strategy.
We don’t have much to contribute to this thread, I imagine, as those of you who are into it are well beyond our level of sophistication. But we were looking into downloading some of the user-created material just for fun. We’re wondering how the cost of the user blueprints is calculated. Does the game set the price based on the materials involved? Or do the creators get to name a price?
We’re also open to any advice you want to offer newbies, but in general, we’ll just plan to keep an eye on this thread and see how others are enjoying it.
