PlanetSide 2 is out tomorrow peoples!

For me, its the satisfaction in knowing my opponent was driving in the middle of nowhere and blew up for apparently no reason.

They are hard to counter, because mineguard replaces other, more versatile defensive options and spotting them in time is hard if you are cruising at 60kph. I’m pretty sure if you had a squad of upgraded engineers, and planted mines spaced out down a road, a column of tanks would go and get blasted by every single one.

For whatever reason, I think having the proximity/claymore/bouncing betty mines in the game is stupid. It’s just bad gameplay to have a random “oh I just died and no one shot me” mechanic, and someone else gets a kill for just randomly placing something. I think it has no place in video games - it doesn’t add anything, it’s just like a griefing/free kill lottery.

AT mines don’t bother me quite so much. I’m not sure why. I guess maybe because they serve more of a critical tactical role in some cases rather than just as a free kill, or… maybe because you pretty much know you’re going to get a kill with a prox mine with hundreds of people running around, but AT mines require some deliberate placement to get it under an enemy vehicle.

This is what you should be doing with us

For the life of me, I can’t seem to get kills with the bouncing betty. Maybe I am and just not noticing. I did get blown up by a claymore this morning- a pretty foolproof strat is to put them near capture points.

I don’t think they are that cheesy- with the flak armor buff coming up you can reduce explosive damage by up to 50%. Combined with Heavy Assault’s resist shield, one antipersonnel mine is no longer a wtfkill. Remember mines by themselves are only effective if you can kill the enemy outright. Damaging them when no friendlies are around gets you nothing.

For anybody frustrated by getting killed over and over, I have a simple piece of advice I learned: use the element of surprise. 90% of the time I die, its because I was shot by someone I didn’t see. If you get the jump on the enemy, its a huge advantage, because:

-Getting shot ruins your aim
-Infantry only take around 7 bullets to kill.

Particularly with the LMG, its easy to rack up kills with the right positioning. Attacking a biolab, there is a balcony wall you can perch on near the enemy spawn room. You can see the shielded doorway, but they cant really see you. You can plug anyone that walks out the door; many of them will have their back facing you.

Patch notes for Game Update 1.

They made a monumental mistake for no reason. I’m perplexed. No indication before the patch that this would be going on too.

You can now make multiple characters of different factions on the same server. Already when one side is starting to lose a continent, they start abandoning it in droves. People won’t play for a losing fight. And they just gave an ability for the people who are losing the fight to switch to the side of the winning team. That will steamroll. It’s going to even further damage the ability to find anyone defending a base to fight against - because now they’re just going to hop accounts and become part of your attack force.

Or worse, the tactical implications are that an organized platoon could have guys hop their account to go friendly fire kill a pesky sunderer that’s giving them trouble. Or have a friendly sitting on the other side calling out deployment locations, composition of forces, etc.

There’s also a sense of factional identity which, while silly, kind of enhances the game, which gets damaged by this.

What the hell motivated them to do that?

I think they just did it to piss you off.

Kidding aside, I agree with you that it’s a pretty big mistake. I will not be surprised the first time I see a sunderer getting blown up, or huge swings in population. I don’t know what problem they were tying to fix with this.

This, a dozen times this. Usually even stupid patch changes have some sort of easy to see reasoning behind them, but this has me baffled. Though you could already do this by having more than one account, this just made it more convenient.

One change not in the patch notes was a buff to Flak Armor - it starts at 15% now and goes all the way to 50%. I had some certs saved so I bought it up to rank 4 for 39% explosion damage resistance and it shows. On the other hand, not having extra hp means snipers one-shot me always. No more staying alive with a tiny sliver of health from that.

I think this might be why they did it. Just throwing in the towel.

I agree, though, that it’s a stupid mistake.

I made this reply on the official forums to a “you could do this before on other accounts!” claim

Of course I wanted more than one character on a server but I was relieved that it wasn’t allowed, it made sense. I can’t believe they now allow it. They should at least not allow you to switch characters on the same server for 30 min or so.

This might be an appropriate compromise.

I agree with with Beef, though, 100%.

Apparently the patch for the game is 2.6gb. Not sure why, unless they’re preloading a new continent or something. But you might want to leave your launcher open before you intend to play so you’re all up to date when you’re ready.

Yeah, I just got home itching to shoot somebody and… 2654MB.

Yep I’ve resorted to catching up on chores and watching TV!

So I was thinking, this game sort of feels of like a huge Section 8: Prejudice. That game was actually surprisingly great, but no one ever played it. One really great thing S8:P had though was that while you were also fighting over normal capture points battlefield style to win the ticket race, every few minutes it would inject a random mission into the game.

The missions would be something like… a high tech satellite is destroyed in orbit and the pieces are marked and scattered around the map, and both teams had to race to collect them. Or an AI Convoy would spawn with a marked start and end point, and one team would have to escort it while the other team defended. Or you’d have to place a beacon inside an enemy owned base to call in a big airstrike.

You could adapt something like that to PS2 - dynamic mission generation - to escort convoys or fight over a particular outpost. Maybe you could get individual or squad missions like “destroy the main shield generators at this amp station” or “kill a deployed enemy sunderer in this sector”. It would be a cool way of focusing the action and giving a sense of purpose.

Electronic Chaos thought maybe they should have a capture the flag sort of scenario where a flag drops randomly every few hours into some central territory, and the team had to run it back to their warp gate. I think that could end up being a lot of fun. I mean, dress it up in some way to fit the setting of course, but fundamentally it’d be awesome to see the big flag carrying convoys come under attack.

This game has way too many undocumented changes. I utterly despise undocumented changes. And not just minor stuff - for instance, increasing flak armor to 50% at max rank wasn’t even mentioned in the patch notes.

I don’t think I’ll like changes to tech plants, it just sort of turns them into another amp station. Tech plant battles were too bottlenecked, but a more minor balance tweak could’ve been to give another way into the main building, rather than making them extremely hard to defend by putting the shield gens outside.

Rumor floating out there about a 3x station cash day on Dec 21. Well, someone posted an image of the promo to reddit that looks legit, and he’s an established poster there, but still, could be a hoax. Just thought I’d give you a heads up. Don’t buy anything till then.

You can use the Walmart cards to get 2000 points for $15 (25% free), and then turn them in on 3x day and you get 6000sc for 15, so 75% off normal price.

I may buy some cards now and turn them in later, because I don’t want to go Walmart near Christmas, and the cards may sell out on a 3x day. I’ll be pretty miffed if it turns out to be a 2x day or nothing at all.

The rumor seems to have been implicitly confirmed. Someone was asking about if this would apply to Europe too, where they have some sort of difference in the way the cash store works, and one of the devs posted on reddit that Europe has their own seperate promotions. Which implies that it’s legit. So I’m going to get some cards today before they sell out/hitting walmart 3 days before christmas etc. Each $15 card becomes 6000 points, so I suggest you all get at least one. A 700 point weapon becomes $1.75, quite reasonable.
