PlanetSide 2 is out tomorrow peoples!

I was playing Max on top of a cliff and a Scythe flew into me from the side, just a few feet off the ground. They lived I died. I had to laugh though, first time I’ve been killed by an aircraft like that.

This might not seem like much of an accomplishment to some, but finally slightly over 1 KD ratio for the whole playtime - 944/940 K/D. Was looking bad for this evening but had some amazing Maggy drivers who let me gunner for them and killed 10+ people (half of them in Prowlers) with my last life before logging off.

Now I can die happy.

Merge happens tonight at midnight. I’m excited. I’m dissapointed they aren’t merging all 3 West servers - since Genudine + Helios will still probably be the smallest US server, but it should be a big improvement over what we had.

It will be nice, mind you looking at the populations it will still be a huge pop of NC as both servers seam to have a 40% NC pop, based on my highly scientific " remeber to look at the populations if you remeber to do so" approach.
Would be nice to take a vacation to one of the other continents as well.

Yeah, that’s another reason we should’ve merged with Connery, it would’ve done well for the TR population. That said, the situation can’t/won’t get any worse, they just missed an opportunity to make it better.

Just noticed the daily sale today is the zephyr. So grab it if you don’t have it.

Woo

Genudine is gone. IT CAN’T HURT US ANYMORE.

Anyway, as should be obvious, we’re going to play a lot this weekend. If you haven’t played for a while, come back and join us. Probably bring booze. I’m hoping we can at least fill up at 12 man squad. Should be glorious. Starting tonight/Friday around 7ish Eastern.

I’ll be on Saturday … hope to see some peeps! I know, it’s been awhile … sorry about that :frowning:

I am interested, can I get some answers to a few questions?

  1. Is this a true persistent MMO? i.e. do you level, choose a class, etc?

  2. How are naming conventions? First and Last name, unique to server?

  3. How would you compare the combat to say Tribes, which is the only FPS online game I have played.

Thanks in advance…

It is 100% persistent, 100% PVP. It is more like Battlefield 3 on a much bigger map, 3 different continents. No instancing at all. You can and will be in battles with dozens or hundreds of people.

You do level although that just seems to be a number and doesn’t affect your stats. Just one name, and an outfit tag. Your class is chosen when you spawn or at a friendly weapons terminal on demand.

Tribes is a lot about skiing skill, in PS2 it’s more about normal running and cover, squad based combat. The vehicles in PS2 are way more useful than Tribes. There are tanks, sunderers (personell carriers), and aircraft.

It’s all done in a somewhat scifi style but it’s not too far out.

Watch some gameplay videos on YouTube, or just download it, it’s free to play. Paying gives you faster access to weapons and equipment but it isn’t pay to win at all. The weapons tend to be sidegrades rather than overpowered upgrades.

I’ll be on sometime this weekend. But I’ll be playing NC. If you see an engineer named Angeleyes hold your fire long enough for me to shoot you.

Very persistent. Each map is an entire continent; there’s no zoning within it nor instancing of any kind.

You level, but your level is just a number indicating how experienced you are. There are no classes in the usual sense. Whenever you spawn or are at an infantry terminal you can switch your skill and equipment set. Progression is via spending “cert” points which are earned by gaining experience. You can spend points on each “class” and on each weapon.

Names are a single handle and are unique across all servers. Which is why the recent server mergers were painless.

I’m not an experienced FPS player so I can’t give comparisons. But I really like playing this game. Although it’s typically just a few hours per week.

Bloody rebel hippies
:stuck_out_tongue:

Well the merge of course was a huge improvement. Like you aren’t even playing the same game. On one hand I’m happy I’ll be able to go back to playing the game with enthusiasm again. On the other hand, I’m pissed it took them this long to do it and we’ve spent months on the shittiest server in the game.

I agree with SeniorBeef in that paying “SmedBucks” really only gives you side-grades but most of the default stuff is perfectly servicible. The default tank cannons, for example, are so versatile I went from AP shells (which I paid Smedbucks for ) back to HEAT shells (which are free) simply because the ‘default’ vehicle configuration tends to be the most versatile.

You guys see the player site? Still has some glitches but a lot of cool info there. Leaderboards too.

Apparently there are about 5500 people who’ve played this game more than me, which is kind of nuts considering how much I’ve played it. On our server, 500 have played more than me, but I’m still in the top 100 in scoring (#85)

2 of my top 4 infantry weapons? Frags and C4. Aww yeah.

Game update 4 patch notes

We’re going to get the southeast warpgate. Gonna suck for a while.

I like the server merges - I ended up in in a great large battle last night. Much more fun. That said I have had some entertainment during quiet periods just hunting one other person (well Ok he was hunting me) around a deserted facility trying to cap it.

The visibility of the development schedule and ability to provide input is fantastic, I saw someone complaining that the input was SOE “farming for free content” , I suppose some people are just never happy.
Saw this on the bug fixes - that is some attention to detail right there.
•The shell casings for all pump action shotguns should now eject from the weapon at the correct time and match the texture of the shell casings being loaded

I do worry a little about ability inflation. As player base get more experienced the available amount of fire power goes up - making it very hard for new players to get in and not get insta killed over and over, and no ability to kill someone certed up to the max. Hopefully they can get the players to expend their accumulating certs across a breadth of differing upgrades that they have to pick and chose from according to what the operation/conditions are rather than have some being able to cert up to being an indestructible uberkiller.
Not an issue now as there are plenty of things to spend certs on, just a probably unfounded concern for the future.

Final random thought - I would have preferred to see the tank field of view and turret travers speed restricted rather than lowering the blast radius. Something needs to be done to force armor to rely on infantry a little more. Armor would never go into an “urban” environment without infantry support due to the fact they cannot traverse their guns on target and need some cover.
Lots of good discussion on the sundies but I don’t see my request for the A team paint job and dan da daaa horn going anywhere though
The Flash jump seat will be fun and the buggy looks awesome.

aaaaaand oh joy another 1.9gig download. Glad I don’t have throttled internet
Still can’t complain too much for a free (other then the cash I paid) game

I was on for a bit last night–couldn’t sleep–and I gotta say how awesome it is to have the merged server. Lots of people on even at 2am. Epic battles raging all night! I had my best K/D ratio ever, partly because I was in a good platoon that sought action, but wasn’t stupid.

Let’s try to schedule more SDMB events!
