Can some Doper tell me what Clint Eastwood film this was in? Is it a real song? And, why does every DJ have to see this movie?
Hey, maybe that was the movie’s title…? When did this come out. I must have missed it. You see, in all the confusion I plumb forget. I guess I don’t feel too lucky, punk!
Jinx
(You boys gonna pull those pistols, or whistle “Dixie”?)
It is indeed a real song sung very well by Johnny Mathis (if I remember correctly). Very romantic. The reason it is recommended for radio DJs to see is that it demonstrates just how attached some listeners can get to a radio personality and how emotional connections with some of those listeners can get dangerous.
Virtually every DJ from the old days has a story about how some fan who he linked up with who went a bit overboard on him (there were few female DJs in those days). It happened to me and trust me I am no Clint Eastwood. The bad part is that you don’t see it coming. You have a bunch of mildly normal fans which does incredible things for your ego and then there is one person who does a little bit more and it is no big thing and a little bit more and…then it is “how do you spell restraining order?”
I have heard these days it is even worse for female (disc)jocks.
The song is just called “Misty” and it is indeed a classic sung by Johnny Mathis. The movie is indeed called “Play Misty For Me” and it was Clint’s directorial debut (showing many influences from his mentor, Don Siegel).
By the by, if you ever see “Fatal Attraction” after having seen PMFM, you’ll see what a blatant rip-off FA truly was…Timmy
