Play Name that Tune with me again--- 1980's Edition.

Aretha Franklin-- Freeway of Love

#64: Blood and Roses by The Smithereens
117) I pull out the plank and say
“Thank you for yanking me back
To the fact that there’s
Always something to distract.”

      But sometimes it's hard
To know if I'm doing it right.
      Can I have it all?
Can I have it all now?
      We can't have it all.
  1. And watching lovers part I feel you smiling
What glass splinters lie so deep in your mind
To tear out from your eyes with a thought to stiffin brooding lies
And I’ll only watch you leave me further behind

**#90:**Who’s Behind the Door - Zebra (I think)

  1. Day after day, it reappears
Night after night, my hearbeat shows the fear
    ghosts appear and fade away.

#119: Overkill by Men at Work

Backlog Schmacklog…
120)Hey hey,
Night fights day.
There’s food for the thinkers,
And the innocents can all live slowly,
All live slowly.
My, my,
The sky will cry
Jewels for the thirsty,
And the guilty one’s can all die slowly ,
All die slowly.

  1. Senses working overtime - XTC

  2. We walked in the cold air.
Freezing breath on a window pane,
    Lying and waiting.
The man in the dark in a picture frame,
    So mystic and soulful.
A voice reaching out in a piercing cry,
    It stays with you until

The feeling has gone only you and I.
It means nothing to me.
This means nothing to me.

  1. I’ve never seen you look like this without a reason
    Another promise fallen through
    Another season passes by you
I never took the smile away from anybody’s face
And that’s a desperate way to look
For someone who is still a child

  2. Under blue moon I saw you
    So soon you’ll take me
    Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
    Unwillingly mine

#121: **Vienna ** by Ultravox

#122: In a Big Country by Big Country

  1. The Killing Moon - Echo & the Bunnymen

Yea neofishboy finally got the Smithereens!

#116 Nirvana, Blew

#124 You give me the reason
You give me control
I gave you my purity
My purity you stole

Ack! Is it Heartache?

Someone should burn a CD with all of the songs from this thread. What an amazing, diverse compilation!

My #92 is still unsolved…it’s not that unknown of a band

  1. She moves among men
They would seek to have her as a prize
But she is in the shadows
    The ocean and the sand
She is everywhere and no place
    And a new one

  2. All my lazy teenage boasts are now high precision ghosts
And they’re coming round the track to haunt me.
When she looks at me and laughs I remind her of the facts
I’m the king of rock’n roll completely

And a shiny gold star for Morgainelf!

What’s really embarrassing to me about this thread is that I miss so many of these until someone posts the answer and then I go, “of course! How could I have missed that?!”

  1. Um, would it by any chance be The King of Rock’n Roll by Prefab Sprout?

Nine Inch Nails’ Sin. Pretty Hate Machine was released in late 1989, but I know the single came out in 1990. So you juuuust squeezed this one in.

Um, yes

117 is Suspended in Gaffa by Kate Bush, 118 is The Chauffeur by Duran Duran.

Now, let’s think of one… hmm.

Oops… I meant 78!

I can no longer keep track of what was answered and what hasn’t because, well, there are too many pages and I’m way too lazy-- and stupid.

But I think there’s a lot. Here’s another.

I keep your picture
Up on the wall
It hides a messy stain
That’s lying there
So dont you ask me
To give it back
I know you know
It doesnt mean that much to me
And Squish, your not the only one. I’ll see an answer and think I knew that!

  1. That’s 10CC “I’m Not in Love”, but I thought that was '70s!

I can’t believe I didn’t get The Chauffeur. I LOVE that song!

Here’s another
127. Here I go and I don’t know why
I spin so ceaselessly
Could it be he’s taking over me

Someone else on this board knows Zebra?!?!?

That song is “Who’s Behind the Door” by New Orleans’ own Zebra. Later, they became a regular in the NYC/Long Island bar-band scene.

Dr. Righteous – are you from either New Orleans or New York City?

A couple of mine remain unsloved. All weekend. Now, the rap ones I put up were eye-deed right away but these heavy metal (that’s a hint) ones from the same band (another hint there) have stumped you all, somehow. I know I wasn’t the only one in a painted denim jacket smoking Marlboros outside the 2nd floor fire exit in 1984. I mean, come on people. Here they are:

  1. I left alone, my mind was blank
I needed time to think, to get these memories from my mind
What did I see? Can I believe?
That what I saw that night was real and not just fantasy
92a) You’ll take my life but I’ll take yours too
You’ll fire musket but I’ll run you through
So when you’re waiting for the next attack
You better _____* there’s no turning back
  • forgot the word that goes here. Extra credit if you know what it is.

I’ll do my part: No. 112 is Afrika Bambaataa (sp?) and John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten). I can’t remeber the name of the song, “World of Destruction” maybe? What an annoyong song that was.

Should I add another. Oh, what the hell:

She gets mad
And she starts to cry
She takes a swing, man
She can’t hit
She don’t mean no harm
She just don’t know
What else to do about it
