... playing World of Warcraft too much?

You use FFA loot with people you don’t know? Otherwise, how do they ninja? Granted, they could still win a “need” roll on something they can’t use, but it’s not a sure thing and would be a pretty serious indication that something was up.

What is FFA?

And the common server rule for instance is pass on ALL BoP, and then discuss. So if four people pass and one person rolls anything, they obviously win.

And for Shibb, to “ninja” something is to take a drop that doesn’t belong to you.

Looting without following looting etiquette. Also, watching someone fight 3 mob and then sneaking in to take the resource before the last guy falls down dead.

The other day, my hubby accidentally walloped me while turning. I said, “Aarrrgggllll” in that horrible, horrible Murlock gurgle. My son fell out laughing-- everyone else just thought I was insane.

Also, my son says everyone except gnomes should have a “punt” skill. So that you can pick up gnomes and punt them over the horizon. He doesn’t like gnomes much.

I HATE murlocs. I hate those little bastards. They attack and then run away to get their friends, the cowardly little pricks.

The sound of a murloc dying is music to my ears.

I, too, hate those fuckers. Sooooo much. HATE!

Understand that its been some time since I’ve played so its remotely possible some of the things I’m going to mention have changed.

That said, basically the Warlock class is weak as far as PvP is concerned making us an easy target. In fact other classes will go out of their way to attack us because of this. The main reason is that the Warlocks don’t have a get out of jail free card in the form of an instant cast stun or root that will allow them to escape. We do get a fear spell, but its on a 3 sec cast (IIRC) which makes it virtually useless if you are being pounded on.

In addition to not being able to run away there are the spells and the damage they do. Some of the spells are quite powerful…but they are on ridiculously long cast timers. The DOTs are nice (especially if you spec for them) and can be insta-cast (in some cases) but their damage output it too slow…I almost never kill anyone with even my full stack of DOTs (though they are nice if you survive the battle for the RP’s you get). All the AOE’s that the warlock gets are channeled spells and again the damage output for them is disappointing (though again if you can actually cast it AND survive you’ll get some nice points out of it).

Finally there are the pets…which are virtually useless in PvP. I usually use either the Succubus (which does have some CC, though you almost have to micromanage her to get it to work in PvP…and it seems to get resisted a lot) or the Imp (for the extra hitpoints…basically you just put the pet on passive and nothing can touch it, then drag it around as a HP battery). The other pets are either useless or specialized (like the Felhunter which works ok against other casters). The 2 most powerful pets are actually more dangerous to me than to the enemy players as they tend to break Enslave Demon randomly and attack me instead (also you can’t cast them in a dungeon).

The other thing that sucks is that some of your most powerful abilities you need Soul Shards for them. Now, you can get these (in theory) while playing PvP, but I usually run out after playing for an hour or so and so have to go out and farm SS for a while before I can wander back into PvP ('course with the queue system you have to do something while you wait anyway). Also, SS (currently) take up backpack space…in fact when I play PvP I usually have one 16 slot backpack dedicated to SS’s.

Anyway, there are a lot of major and minor problems with the Warlock that only become obvious when you start really playing PvP intensely with good enemy players. Normally I confine myself to a complete support role, giving party members health stones, adding my DOTs and AOE spells to increase our points and such. In a one on one situation I can usually hold my own depending on if all my timers are up. There are a few classes though that you basically don’t stand a chance against reguardless of the circumstances…the rogue springs to mind. I’ve had rogues attack me non-stealthed even with all my DOTs on them and still manage to kill me even with all my various timers up.

If you want more info on problems with the Warlock class Blizzard used to have a Warlock forum on their main website where a lot of these issues and more are discussed. As I said, its possible that some of these have been addressed in the months since I stopped playing. I haven’t heard though that the Warlock has been radically changed, heard that their damage output has been increased for PvP, nor have I heard anyone mention a ‘get out of jail free card’ for them (all the other classes have something btw) so I kind of doubt much has changed.

Murrrrrglglglglglglgl!!!

I knew what the term meant, just wondering where it came from. I didn’t think real ninjas did that (there’s an old SDMB schtick in here, somewhere, isn’t there). The other day I’d gone through and cleaned out some mine, when a dude came along to kill the last guy before a chest. So I went over and opened the chest. He started saying “That’s mine, that’s mine!” and I politely told him to get bent. How should things like that be resolved? Is there some sort of pandeity council to settle disputes?

What are the “get out of jail” free cards for the other classes? (I’m scribbling furiously here)

I can see where that is rude. There are often chests with mobs around, and if you kill all the mobs, you should get the chest. Especially considering you can’t really open the chest with something beating on you.

I think the get bent statement was a bit rude considering.

I don’t know about WOW, but in other games, you can report to moderator types in game. Don’t know how to do that in WOW, but I need to learn because there is an aweful lot of kill stealing in this game.

I’m not even sure what that term means. Do you mean like how pally has LoH?

For the Paladins I think it’s more Divine Light + anything that gets you out of trouble. I think you could even cast Divine Light and then Hearthstone off the scene, although I’ve not yet tried that one (my paladin is only just a 10, so DL might not last long enough yet). Similar, I suppose, with a Priest(ess) and Seal of Protection, although that’s not as impermiable as DL.

Not sure I was clear enough: I killed about 50-100 kobolds, hacking and slaying. As I am on the penultimate kobold before the chest, here comes Joeschmoe and attacks the last kobold. I finish penultimate kobold, then go for the chest. I’m sure that one or two kobolds must have resurrected, so he probably didn’t just have to kill one to get to the chest, but there was no one in the mine ahead of me and I’d hacked clear through the thing. The actual conversation at the end was more along the lines of:

Him: Hey, that’s mine!
Me: How so?
Him: Because.
Me: Tough luck.

If he’d asked to roll for it I’d have considered it, but to me it was like he was running in to put on the star after I’d decorated the whole tree.

I’ll give a couple of examples I can think of off the top of my head. The priest for instance gets an insta-fear and shield spell so if they are under attack they can pop their ‘get out of jail free’ and get away. The mage gets a damage shield (mana based) and an insta-stun (plus they get sheep, though that is on a cast timer), as well as an quick casting AOE freeze spell (Frost Nova IIRC). The hunter gets both a stun shot and a long duration shot that sleeps the target, plus a style (wing clip?) that either slows or roots a target…and they get their traps. The druid (and shaman I think) both get insta-roots.

All these spells allow you to basically get away if the fight goes sour by giving you an insta-cast spell (i.e. you can cast it even if you are getting pounded on as its not on a timer that gets reset every time you are hit). Some classes also get additional ‘get out of jail free’ type abilities that allow them short bursts of speed or to teleport away. All this stuff adds up to giving you a better chance of survival if things aren’t going so well. The Warlock (at least when I was still playing mine) didn’t have any of these abilities on an insta-cast. The things the warlock DOES have on insta-cast aren’t able to get you away from a fight…only keep you alive for a bit longer (such as the health stones).

Hopefully this quick explaination will clear things up. If not I’ll take another shot after I get out of my meeting this afternoon.

It’s the question mark button down in your control panel, beside the logout/options button.

As far as “Get out of jail free” cards, rogues have gouge and cheap shot plus sprint.

[QUOTE=tracer
Well, a few weeks ago, my newlywed wife managed to get me hooked on World of Warcraft. (I resisted as long as I could, but those damn free trials will get’cha every time.)
[/QUOTE]

I’ve been thinking about the free 10-day trial, but I couldn’t find out one thing: If you get started with the free trial, after the trial is over do you just pay month to month, or do you still have to pay $50+ for the game itself? If you’re paying a monthly fee they should give you the game for free!

I actually don’t know how the trial works, so I could be wrong, but I think you have to actually have the game to play the free trial in the first place, unless you play on the computer of someone who has the game already. I can’t imagine downloading the whole thing (hell, I get impatient downloading the patches!) online.

Free for all (ie. one of the loot settings available to the group leader).

I see from your description that this isn’t the case. I’ve never really ran into ninja looting in WoW, but I haven’t done high end instances with pick up groups. I know the people I’m with. If it’s a real problem though, I would probably discuss loot before the mob is killed and then select the proper loot option instead of passing.

I will start a run with my backpack loaded with 1 healthstone, 1 stack of healing potions, 1 soulstone, 1 empty slot for summoned water and 12 soulshards. I will have my next moonstone bag have at least 12 shards for the primary issuing of healthstones and random emergency summoning of some idiot who cant be bothered to run to the instance. I have 2 empty moonstone bags, and then the last moonstone bag [did i mention i was a tailor=)] that has my hearthstone, 2 more stacks healing potions, 1 stack mana potions, 3 stacks food, 3 stacks water, 2 stacks mana cookies, spare wand, spare robe of the void, 2 trinkets. Sometimes one of my more or less empty bags will have a stack of rune thread, a couple stacks of runecloth and other tailoring materials. In a pinch, I can generally make myself a complete set of runecloth armor as I am the only one that cant nip out and get my armor repaired and summoned back.

And why in the name of ghu’s little green apples can I make every single piece of armor I am wearing and NOT be able to repair it /sulk
