Can a PS3 game bought in the US be played on a PS3 that was purchased in Europe, or do they have some region coding, like DVDs?

FYI, the answer seems to be that they can be played abroad.

After some digging on the UK playstation website, I got this

Isn’t there the issue of NTSC vs PAL? Certainly is with Wii and Xbox360 games.

The hardware itself isn’t region-locked, with a few caveats:

  1. Games sold in a particular region may not support screen resolutions from other regions. This is on a game by game basis. So, for example, a game sold in the U.S. might not support PAL. I believe this mostly applies to NTSC and PAL and is not a problem with the different HD formats.

  2. Backwards compatability for PS2 titles is still region-locked.

  3. Each region has its own version of the Store. It is **possible ** to set up an account with a Store outside your home region, but I’m not sure what hoops you have to jump through to do it.
