So many things in this world are thoroughly dependent on Word of Mouth to succeed…television, music, theatre, restaurants… and so I thought it might be fun to have a thread to spread said word in a convenient list format for all to see and discuss, mainly so we don’t have to riddle other threads with hijacks of shameless self promotion.
I’ll start, and then you plead yours:
Please watch Big Apple on CBS (Thursdays at 9:00 CST). Yes, it’s a typical cop drama, with typical characters, but the acting is truly superb and I think it’s getting the royal shaft in the promotion department. Plus, I think it’s about time Titus Welliver got a break. He’s so dreamy, and every show he’s in is good, but ends up being cancelled. Tune in at least once…for me.
Du Yee is a chinese/thai/general asian restaurant that just opened up at Clark and Belmont in Chicago. The eggrolls are the best I’ve ever had, and the food is fresh, not greasy at all…and it’s a casual fun atomosphere…moderately priced and great service.
And finally…please go buy the new Rammstein album Mutter on April 3rd. If you ever wanted to ‘try out’ metal industrial, gothic or basic ‘modern rock’, I urge you to try out this one. Sonne and Links are the singles…and they’re both FANTASTIC.
I already watch and like Big Apple, jarbaby. The first few times it was to see Ed O’Neill. Now I’m hooked. Plus I get to look at Micheal Madson, even if he is the bad guy.
If I’m ever in Chicago, I will try the Du Yee. Sounds delicious.
Rammstein, you say? Is it okay if I just call my local radio station and ask them to play them a few times before I buy it?
What do I want? Hmmmmmm…
The only thing I can think of is for you to get on the National Bone Marrow registry list if you’re not already on it. (They just withdraw a small vial of blood to look for potential matches, takes about 5 minutes.)
Hey Tequila, if you get a radio station to play Links OR Sonne, i’ll personally send you a check for $37. It just won’t happen. American radio is scared of the German language.
Yes, I would urge EVERYONE to do this…but before you go…do research on what the actual process of donation would be, should someone need your marrow. While it’s always worthwhile to save someone’s life…you should know the procedure, which is more involved than one might believe. Don’t you agree Tequila?
Okay, so who do I contact for the National Bone Marrow Registry? Phone number? Web link? Nothing is listed in my local phone book.
And for myself, on a more magnanimous note, for those of you who can give blood, check with your local blood bank about pheresis - donating platlets for burn victims and those undergoing cancer treatments. Give blood for about an hour and a half, up to 24 time per year, and you actually get most of your own blood back.
I would urge everyone to be sure and check that little box on your driver’s license for Organ Donor. Give someone else a chance at life when yours is done.
I also think that most people’s idea of what happens during the marrow havesting is a lot more horrific than what happens. (I got the registry to Naval base I used to work at and a lot of people had misconceptions about the procedure.)
This was taken from Comprehensive Cancer Information - National Cancer Institute
But it’s a heck of a lot better than some of the stories I had heard! Some people thought they had to basically skin your ass and scrape your leg bone to collect marrow, with no anaesthesia. I had to set them straight on that.
Sorry about the huge post, but I had a lot to say on this.
Hope this helps encourage people to at least consider the idea of getting on the registry
jarbabyj: “Du Hast” was all over the radio in Houston a while back, and I’ve heard it here in Austin too. And earlier this week I heard Nena’s “99 Luftballons”. The chances that something from the new Rammstein will get on the air are pretty good.
Yes, Du Hast was all over the radio. Links will not be. Dockrock.de released an article last week that American DJs are wary to play it (some even ‘boycotting’ it) because it features a sample of “marching” including a marching cadence (Links, zwo, drei, fier) which of course they’ve decided means that Rammstein are NAZIs, when the song is about the fact that they’ve been misconstrued as such by the media. Sonne will not be played because it’s construed as a ‘ballad’ and since U.S. radio has painted Rammstein into the “scary German band” corner, they wouldn’t dare play a single that contradicted it. Don’t get me ranting on the horrid treatment of Rammstein on modern rock radio or MTV, you don’t want to sit through it
But hey, if you hear anything on the radio, let me know! Texas is actually one of the states listed as having played before it was originally released, although they didn’t put it in heavy rotation.
Interestingly, Du Hast is the number one German language single ever released in the United States, having beat out Nena’s 99 Luftballoons!
Please learn about the OTC and prescription medications that you take, especially if it is something you could end up taking for the rest of your life. My mom is facing serious health problems, including diabetes, because a doctor she used to see prescribed cortisone without giving her good information on how long and under what conditions to use the medication.
All medications, including herbal remedies, have side effects - sometimes more severe than the problem you are taking the medicine for.
Buckle up and buckle your kids!!! Whenever I hear about a car accident where people are thrown from the vehicle, I cringe. Bad enough that you put your own skin at risk, but how dare you endanger your young 'uns!! So what if they whine? Would you rather they be permanently silenced??
And don’t smoke around your kids either… sheesh.
I’m also a big advocate of adopting pets from shelters rather than buying from breeders. Our last 3 dogs were either foundlings or rescued. They’ve all had wonderful dispositions, and I feel good knowing they didn’t have to be put down.

HAHAHA 94.1 WJJO plays it, they have a web station too.
