Well, that explains a lot …
Woman in TX: man was intact and (almost certainly) clearly alive after impact, she drove home, left him alone for a day or two to die, then talked some friends into helping her secretly dispose of the body.
Kid in FL: man was dismembered and quite obviously dead after impact, he drove 1 mile home and immediately called 911.
Still don’t see a difference?
The lady in TX just got fifty years. She probably would have gotten the gas chamber if anyone could have found a way to interpret the language in the ‘special circumstances’ provision to justify a capital murder charge … This kid in FL doesn’t deserve anything like this. He had a moment of panic, which didn’t cause any harm to anyone (except possibly the poor schmuck who found the legs, who may well need therapy). Unless he was driving recklessly at the time (which may or may not be the case), he’ll probably end up with a fine and maybe a temporary license suspension.
