Please criticize my position on whether God exists

As you can see from my Guest status, I’m still tiptoeing around trying to learn about the SDMBs. If I commit a fayux pass, please tell me what it is and forgive me.

I have written an article I propose to add to the pages of my Web site. It takes a position in favor of the proposition that God likely does (or does not, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of this post) exist. I’d like lots of smart, thoughtful, literate people to review that article and criticize it for logical or factual errors before I publish it for all to see.

Before I tell you how to read the article, is this even a legitimate question to ask of this board? If it is not, is there a better way for me to achieve what I want?

Thanks.

This is the right forum for it. You might want to search on the many other threads we’ve had on the same topic.

One question - what research have you done for this paper? There are lots of books out there on both sides of the issue at different levels of philosophical sophistication you might want to look at.

One danger - we’ve discussed this so much that, like the old joke about convicts and punchlines, when you put out an argument for either side you might get back the Doper equivalent of “22.”

But fire away.

I’m not a moderator, but I’m sure it’s a perfectly appropriate question for this board and the Great Debates, welcome!

That topic has been debated here much in the past, and will be debated more in the future.

Guests cannot search, unfortunately.

I see your webpage has a section on logical fallacies. This ought to be interesting.

Not only is it appropriate, but it sounds damned interesting. I am as hard an atheist as they come, but I always find well thought through theistic opinions interesting.

Welcome to the Dope, John. Why don’t you go ahead and post your argument?

I don’t think there’s any logic at all in religion. And I especially believe that people who are into religion are not susceptible to logical arguments of any kind.
I knew a disgusted atheist former minister once who bragged he could out-argue any believer because he knew all the chapters and verses, and also the contrary ones that had turned him into a non-believer. He was so puffed up about it. But when I told him I thought quoting scripture was still playing the religion game he got the point and joined me in just ignoring religion. It’s not worth the aggravation of point by point arguing. That’s like arguing for or against Santa or the Easter Bunny point by point.

Possible earlier threads:

Which came first - the diety, or the atheist?
Why believe in ONE god ?
Why believe in “a” God?
Christianity Simplified Though LOGIC !

(I’m quitting, now. There are a number of excellent arguments in these threads–scattered among some of the most horrible illogic and loony toon assumptions.)

Go ahead and take your shot. Whatever you post will be met with erudition and bullshit, sincere aattempts at understanding and hostile dismissals of your premises.

It is just the way we are on the topic.

The only one I can see is the misspelling of faux pas. I forgive you.
