Please dont flame me but......Doom3 doesn't look that great

After viewing the Hi-Res trailer for Doom 3 premiered at E3, I have to say that the gameplay doesn’t really look all that great. Yeah sure the graphics look phenomenal, and I’ll probably buy it just for that, but there’s just something about it that doesn’t look so great. Maybe its the weapons that are shown, or possibly the fact that it seems to be all close-quarters combat. Anyone else get this feeling? Am I crazy? Maybe I’ve just been let down by so many games.

Opinions?

I got the impression that while the game is graphically outstanding, it just doesn’t look like anything at all revolutionary in terms of gameplay. Same old Doom.

I loved Doom, and Doom II, (and Wolfenstein 3D before that, and Duke Nukem 3D, etc. etc.), but nowadays for my shooters I prefer something more precise, realistic, and tactical. SWAT3, Rogue Spear, America’s Army, all come to mind.

I’m not sure we can say anything about gameplay by simply a few minutes of trailer. I mean, of course, the trailers will show action packed shoot-em-up action. I, personally, will look at the reviews to determine how good the gameplay is.

A month ago, I’d have said you were crazy. After seeing the trailers for Half Life 2, though… Well, I’ll still buy Doom 3, but I’m no longer breathless with anticipation.

That said, even if it is same old Doom, Doom was pretty kick-ass. There’s always room in the genre for a little mindless run’n’gun.

I wasn’t impressed by the movie. I actually sat at my PC and said, “So, that’s it?” numerous times. It’s off my must-buy list.

Glad to see I’m not the only one. However, I do agree with the idea that we can’t judge the game from the short trailer. I too loved the original doom, quake, wolf etc. , but I’ve become more accustomed to open areas and expansive environments.

The giant city of Half-Life 2 looks more up my alley.

The outside shot of the complex looked good in D3 - who knows if we’ll be able to go there in-game?

However, I heard that D3 will be single-player only, and this is a real turn-off for me.

That’s actually a big turn-on for me.

Hmm, that sounds disturbingly kinky. Let me try that again.

I’m pleased to hear that it’ll be single player only. I’ve never had a multiplayer experience that was half as engrossing or original as singleplayer.* I’ve always found deathmatches and their endless variants to be dull and repetitive, and that’s all most FPS offer for multiplay. I hate when an interesting game gets its single player mode gutted in favor of more useless deathmatch options.

*Exception: Halo co-op on the X-Box

Same here. When I heard this, I instantly decided not to buy it. I’ve never found a single player shooter that I’d pay $50+ for. Never. Now with multiplayer, I’ll buy em, but SP only? You’ve got to be joking.

I’m with Miller on the multiplayer. I had fun back with the original Team Fortress in '97 (joined a clan and everything!) but not since.

As far as the rest of the game, I’ve always held that id makes good engines and blah games. Someone’s gonna make a cool game with the Doom 3 engine but it won’t be id.

I dunno, it looks pretty cool to me. I too like the single-player aspect, because I don’t multiplay. Does seem weird that they wouldn’t put that feature in at all, though.

From what I’ve read, D3 WILL have multiplayer: but it will be focused much more on just a few players: no more than 8, and most commonly no more than 4.

I don’t think you can tell much from the video, other than that it looks incredible. I will say that I think id has at least caught on that a game can’t just be a series of encounters with bad guys: it has to have a progression of events that fits into a larger timeline in the story. Half-life was the first game to demonstrate the importance of this, and I think id seems to have taken that to heart. They’ve hired a writer to add story elements, for the first time added some real NPCs, and seem very interested in creating very cinematic-like sequences, using the graphics (especially the shadows) not just as eye-candy, but as actual game elements.
And while HL2 certainly wowed everyone by showing off its physics model, D3 apparently has complex physics in as well (you can even see it in evidence in the movie, unless all those are scripted scenes). So while I don’t know how good of a game it’ll be, I do think that id seems to be at least trying for the first time to create a real, immersive game, rather than a showcase for technology and cooridors full of monsters.

I played a bootleg version of the demo, and I have to say, it looks great. Yes, its the same old gameplay, but its much more atmospheric. And the reason why I think this game will rock?

  • At the end of the demo, you encounter some huge uber-nasty. When it kills you (and it WILL kill you), you fall to its feet, starring at its nasty yellowed toenails and large bunions. Then, it reaches down, rips your head off and eats it. This is shown from the first person perspective. Damn cool, if you ask me.

Anyone got a link to the Half Life 2 trailer? I’ve been arseing around around for a while now and can get any live ones.

Thx.

I’ve gotten the HL2 trailer from several places, but in each instance, the video freezes about 3-4 seconds in.

If you want the snippets, just pay 5$ for gamespot monthly and download their vids. They also include an interview with the game designers which is really good.

If you don’t have the cash, the 600meg high quality version is available from places like fileplanet. It does seem to be glitching for some people, but the gamespot movies haven’t been for me at least. They don’t include the headcrabs or the absolutely stunning sequence with the G-man’s closeups.

Funny how even a thread on D3 turns quickly to the subject of HL2.

And saying D3 doesn’t LOOK that great? That’s definately not the way to put it. It LOOKS stunningly good.

What graphics card?

i don’t think i can ever go bad to the closed-in atmopshere of most fps after playing serious sam 2. It has some MASSIVE dueling arenas that take about 5 minutes just to walk across.

Serious Sam definately gave FPS gamers some SP things that most had been missing for a long time: lots of different sorts of enemies attacking at once, and large open areas. Their engine isn’t half bad either: not the highest polygon counts in the world, but lots of detailed textures and environmental effects (and that really awesome look metal morphing thingie).

Doom3, however, aims to completely re-invent the “closed-in” atmosphere with the use of real shadowing and very much slowed down gameplay. People who have played it have admitted to being really and truly scared by it.

I dunno: just trying to be fair since I’m a HL junkie, and haven’t really been an id fan from Quake2 on.
