High School nickname and long running joke. Yes, it was spelled wrong on purpose.
I named myself after Ozymandias’ mutant lynx in Watchmen.
I just wanted something obscure enough to be picked up by the most learned of nerds, and also sound kinda cool too.
Failed on both counts
Honestly, because my SO’s call sign is Pyro. And I am his feminine half, so I became Pyroette. Then I realized it could be pronounced like a ballet move, which just made it cooler.
Any fan of the movie “A league of their own” would understand.
I wanted to use “There’s no CRYING in baseball”, but that was a tad longish.
Just to add, I’m in no way a fan of any sport, let alone baseball, but that movie has some strange power over me. :dubious: If it’s on, I must watch.
I keep reading that UN as “Wookie in a pub”. I don’t know how…
I think I’ve said it before - S and I are the first 2 letters of my first name. Originally I took the proper phonetics and was Sierra India, but that sounded kinda weird and hokey, so I decided on Sierra Indigo instead.
But now I want to change it.
The secret to my Username is hidden HERE
My first name is Carmen, but a lot of people call me Carm. My birthdate is June 7, 1973.
No, I’m complimenting you. It’s not every day I run into someone who’s heard of Holbein.
I have the famous painting you refer to in a couple of books, yet, oddly enough, can’t remember if I’ve seen IRL.
It’s my first name…I wasn’t feeling very creative when I joined.
DMark was the currency in Germany, and considering I had lived there for many years, I thought it would be an appropriate name. How was I to know that Germany would switch to Euros…
To be honest, I didn’t give all that much thought to choosing a name back in the days when I first signed up.
I probably should just go by my real name: Butch Studdude.
I am somewhat overweight (all my friends assure me I’m not fat, but I’m definitely not a stick either). I also love the writer Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, and the Commander Vimes stories in particular.
I am named after his wife, Lady Sybil Ramkin Vimes. She’s in my sig too, from the book The Fifth Elephant.
From the Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam:
“The moving finger writes, and having writ,
moves on, nor all your piety and wit
can call it back to cancel half a line
nor your tears wash out a word of it.”
OK, so it’s pretentious. Deal with it, proles.
(Lovingly) copied and pasted, just for you:
Do you go by that name on another message board?
I am Savannah because when I picked a pen name for my erotic fiction, I went kind of florid. (I tossed in the last names of two of my favourite male writers, too) Savannah to me is sultry and feminine, and I drove by Savannah Avenue often.
Previously I’ve always been Siren online, since 1991 or so, but that’s becoming used more, and it’s often taken when I sign up somewhere.
Mine is boring. I had to get a name for my character in Everquest. Tried several different names, and finally gave up. Used the random name generator untill I found one that was short, and pronouncable. Got Otan. Moving between servers it ended up that someone else already had Otan on my new server so to avoid a naming conflict they put an x on the end of my name. I found out later that I was the one that had Otan used on that server on another account. By the time I found out I could get it changed back to Otan I was well known as Otanx.
Been using Otanx for alot of stuff after that. Also it seems to be fairly original as if you google my name the first several hits are posts I have made to different message boards.
I think these days I have more friends that know me by Otanx than by my real name.
-Otanx
My name comes from a science fiction story by Cordwainer Smith. The story was called Mark Elf which is German for model 11. It was a story that had a great impact on me when I read it in high school. It had a lot to say about the nature of individuality versus predetermined destiny. The character Mark Elf was an intelligent rocket/bomb. When I decided to stop lurking, the first thing I did was go to Yahoo to create an email address and someone had taken markelf so I frenchified it by spelling it with a “que”. It was a way of making my own statement about free will vs. destiny and honoring a great writer who has been unjustly forgotten.
The only nickname I’ve ever had was 4 eyes and I was damned if I’d use that for a user name.
I just came up with my name as I was registering, then once I registered, I thought how very clever of myself to have come up with it !.. (I realize I am probably the only one that thinks its even remotely clever)
While that sounds like a sad plea for attention, I did think your name was kinda clever.
It’s taken from the famous Roman general, Quintus Fabius (known as Cunctator*). I admired his use of delaying tactics when we studied him in Latin at school.
*from the Latin verb to delay: *cunctor, cunctari, cunctatus sum * and hence the noun cunctator: one who delays
