OK, I am planning on taking a lot of time off in about 2 years (like 6 -12 months). I am going to do this because for the last 3 years I have been working full time, and going to school full time as well. Needless to say, I want a break. By that time, I should have my degree in hand, and I’ll be ready to take on something that I’m actually being educated for. I’d also like to do a little travelling, maybe just a few weeks of doing nothing. You get the idea. So, have any of you done such a thing? I will need $$$$ for this, obviously, and I am doing the following to help finance my plan:
-
I recently got a raise and a promotion (Woo hoo!) I figured that since I was used to living off of X amount of dollars, I’d just save my raise. I transfer the difference between the old wage and the new into a savings account w/ every paycheque. I gotta say, that’s worked pretty well for me so far.

Mr. Gretch and I have dramatically reduced our spending. This helps serve two purposes: to help save money now, and to be used to a “lower” level of living when I do leave my job. Not that I feel that our standard of living has dropped or anything, in fact we’ve found ourselves a lot happier and less stressed by not spending so much money. By lower I just mean a lower level of cash being spent, if that makes sense.
So has anyone here left a job temporarily to pursue something else? (something non-worky) What did you do? How did you like it? Any advice?
