please help find other western movie

So I probably saw this in Denmark bewtween 1970 and 1977, but dont know when it was made. As I remember the title it would translate back into the man who shot jimmi gringo, and no it is not rthe man who shot liberty wallace, i know that one.
So here’s the plot, which i find interesting because it goes against the stereotype:
an old gunfighter comes into a small town, and he’s trying to go quietly about it, he’s kind of tired of the whole thing, wants to retire. But there is this young punk who wants to make a name for himself who keeps pestering him, and he’s not having much luck challenging the old guy, so finally he resorts to killing him in an underhanded manner. He does get a name for himself though, and from then on realizes the monster he released. He will never find peace until someone kills him, and he didnt even deserve it in the first place

The Shootist (1976) has a similar plot – an aging gunfighter who wants to retire – but he wasn’t killed in the way you describe.

Your plot description does sound familiar. Someone will know. There are a lot of western movie fans here.

It has the ring of familiarity to it, but I can’t place it. It’s the gunfighter theme that underlies many westerns. It seems to spell out the undercurrent of the theme, that gunfighters don’t really earn their reputation, and they must in the end die by the gun that they lived by.

The Gunfighter. You’re welcome.

Great call Chefguy.

That’s clearly the movie the OP was talking about. But I was thinking the story also reminded me of I Shot Jesse James.

And there was a Twilight Zone episode called “A Game of Pool” with the same plot (only with pool players instead of gun fighters).

Skippy Homeler, the young gun in The Gunfighter is probably better remembered as one of the hippies in that really bad episode of Star Trek.
