Please help me choose a computer golf game

I downloaded the demo for PGA Championship Golf 2000 some months ago, and I’ve fallen in love with the game with its FreeSwing technology and nice graphics. I’d like to buy it, but there are a couple of things that discourage me:

  1. The game is around five years old, now. While the game is quite advanced, I’m sure that technology has improved by leaps and bounds since then, and I’d like to partake of that if possible.

  2. The platforms listed as compatible are Windows 95, 98, and ME. While the demo seems to work fine with my XP platform, I am afraid that it would be a gamble to expect the same of the full version.

My favorite feature, though, is how the game remains within the Windows format; that is, I don’t have to be isolated from the outside world as my screen is covered in full by graphics that are slightly larger and clunkier than my normal 1024 x 768 pixel Windows setup, and I can minimize it and do other things in the middle of a round, etc.

I tried the demo for what until a few minutes ago was a serious choice: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. This game has similar features to that of PGA 2000, which I found desirable. I also enjoy the many bells and whistles, such as commentary and player customization. What I didn’t like is how the monitor blanked and went to fullscreen graphics, as previously described.

So, I turn to any enthusiasts out there for advice. Does anyone know of a game that is similar to PGA 2000 (in that it remains within Windows), but that represents an anticipated advancement with graphics and compatibility with Windows XP? Thanks!

I wouldn’t worry about it. XP isn’t listed there because it wasn’t around when the game was released.

I have the full PGA 2000 Titanium Edition on my XP system and it works great. Plus there are over 500 courses available here. Sierra no longer supports the game but there are still a lot of folks out there playing it. I have even played in some on line tournaments. Plus you can find it for less than $10 now. I tried the Tiger Woods 2003 last year and it didn’t come close to PGA 2000.

Tiger Woods 2005 is out and it is THE golf game, apparently.

I actually got Tiger Woods 2004 yesterday, after much research. It does pretty well! There’s something like eighteen courses (with a course designer program added on), plus all the play features that make the game quite tedious, if you like. I read how 2005 has some added detail features (as well as options to play legends), but at the expense of such features as more real-life courses and the practice options, which I kind of wanted. I don’t care so much about the added player detail. And, 2004 was half the price of 2005 ($19.99 v. $39.99).

So, it’s a good game, but it does take up the full screen, thereby shutting me off from other things. It also takes a little while to load. With PGA 2000 (the demo at least), it operates fully within Windows, so that I may minimize to do a task as mentioned, chat in another window, etc. I’m willing to sacrifice a little reality and detail for such convenience, too.

So, I plan on getting PGA 2000 in addition, keeping Tiger Woods 2004 around for when I’m not involved with something else. Now, the only trick is finding it for as cheap (or thereabouts) as racer72 helpfully mentioned. And, I forgot about Compatibility Mode, Lute, so thanks for reminding me of that in the case that that’s needed, which thankfully seems to be unlikely.

I’m reminded of Links; I used to play that long ago. Have they done much lately?

ALT-Tab will return you to windows ans minimize the game.
