Please help me choose my new game system

My two roommates and i are going in together on a new game system, that means controllers, games, everything. We have managed to raise $300 for our gaming fund selling unwanted crap on ebay, and we are each going to contribute $200 personally, so we have a total gaming budget of $900 to be spent over the next year. $70 gets subtracted right away for two extra controllers. $200 gets spent on the sports games we want that will be available on all systems NFL, NHL, NBA, and Tony 3 (delayed release for xbox, i know)). After purchasing the console itself we’re left with $330 or enough for 6 xbox or ps2 games; if we get a GC $430 will be left, enough cash for 8 games. We’re pretty much agreed on which titles to get.

PS2:
GT3, Tekken 4, Metal Gear Solid 2, FFX, Twisted Metal Black, and SSX Tricky

XBOX:
Project Gotham, DOA3, Amped, Halo, GunValkyrie, and Jet Set Radio Future

GC:
Mario, Zelda, Rogue Leader, Supersmash Bros, 1080 2, Metroid, Pikimin, Perfect Dark Zero

The problem is one of my roommates wants the nintendo system for the franchise games and i want either ps2 or xbox for the adult racing games and fighters. The other problem is that we feel the ps2 has the best games but we’re getting ripped off for paying $300 for a year old system that is underpowered in comparison to ms and nintendo, and doesn’t include a hard drive or ethernet. And of course there is the question of will xbox freeze and shutter and generally blow ass. Im really caught between a rock and a hard place here. Ive been looking into how much it would cost me to get two systems and its just not feasible with my $900 budget unless im willing to get just one game for each box outside my four sports titles (screw that). Is anyone else faced with a similar problem, if so what are you going to do about it? Last question: information on Tekken 4 (the game i am most interested in) has been sketchy. I know its coming to PS2, and the recent release of tekken for GBA has led some to believe it will be released on the GC as well, but does anyone have an educated guess as to which platforms we can expect it and when? Thanks.

IMHO, you’d get a better response for this in another forum.

Don’t repost it–e-mail Gaudere and ask her to move it.

Well, the easiest thing would be to wait until after Christmas. That will allow people to get a handle on how the X-Box performs (I’m sorry, but all the Doomsday predictions were tossed around for the PSX, N64, and PS2, and were all unfounded then). It also has the added benefit of allowing some of the games (and even the PS2, most likely, if you ultimately decide on that) to drop a bit in price.

Patience, sir. The consoles and games will still be there waiting for you in a month or two. Patience…

If I were you I would wait until next spring. A PS2 isn’t really outdated, it just might not have as long of a shelf life as the XBox, for example. But, after seeing how the PS fared (for a friggin’ long time) I wouldn’t knock the system.

The biggest thing you will face is proprietary games, otherwise you should see a lot of multi-system releases so owning two of the three should land you almost every game. Because of the proprietary games, I say wait until after Christmas to decide on something other than the Gamecube, which is a mandatory purchase IMHO.

I believe there’s already a thread currently in IMHO that covers the same ground.

[sub]My two cents: PS2 yes, Gamecube okay, XBox is begging for trouble.[/sub]

ou know this buying a system with your friends is a bad idea. Of course I’ve learned buying anything with your friends is a bad idea The arguing over a system is a warning sign.

That being said It all comes down to what’s like if you like lots of sports games and violent stuff I’d stick (devil may cry grand theft auto 3 which looks like it might be banned in most of Europe again) with the psx

Although from the magazines are saying there’s going to 4 or 5 rpgs coming out soon (ever notice Sony never has that many real rpgs until the systems been out a year or so )?

If you want games geared to a younger audience and brand names get the game cube (anyone have any friends that bought the n64 with Zelda package and then tried to sell you the system cause all they wanted it for was Zelda )?

But from the Christmas previews buying guides ect there’s no gotta have game for any system so far except for the game boy advance and thats because of the retro gamers who want sf2 and doom old style

If you go with PS2, you can save $20 by getting the PS2 + Gran Turismo 3 bundle. PS2 is also the only system that will play DVDs out of the box - GameCube won’t play them at all, and Xbox makes you pay $50 for a remote. But that only matters if you don’t already have a DVD player.

Better yet, Mr2001, the price of the PS2 is likely to come down with the release of the X-Box. Not a whole helluva lot, mind you… probably abou $20, but most likely no more than $50… but hey, it’s something.

Moving to IMHO.
