Please help me identify this jazz drummer (saw him in The New Yorker in 1997)

I saw a story in The New Yorker about 1997 that profiled a rather distinctive jazz drummer in NYC. Perhaps you can help me identify him with these clues?

He’s known for being a tasteful, driving player, but he plays a very small drumkit—an 18" floor tom used as a bass drum, a 3x14" piccolo snare, and an 18" flat ride. He plays this kit with lightweight marching drumsticks and brushes.

He sounds like an interesting drummer, and I’d like to find out more about him. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten his name. Does anyone know who he is?

The 18" floor tom - as - bass drum could be Joey Baron, but I’m probably wrong. He’s tasteful, he’s driving. If you haven’t heard of him, check him out. He does a lot of work with John Zorn and Bill Frisell. He’s one of my favorites.
