Please Help Me Name My Thoroughbred

Sir Ender. Yes, this IS a cheap joke about France (“surrender”).

1.Dauphin’s Daughter

2.Let Them Eat Cake

3.Opale Chat

4.Miaou

Her Feline Majesty

Kitty Queen

Lady Reign

Lady Cat

She is beautiful, btw.

Gallic Shrug

Is Reign Storm available? I’d like to third that name although it seems too good to not have been taken.

Prince of Cats is the name given by Shakespeare for Juliet’s kinsman. I like it a lot.

Do keep us updated on her racing and such, pretty please? She’s gorgeous! And give her some treats and scratch her for me (I would have that horse spoiled in 2 minutes flat). She’s a real beauty.

Cabbage?
Girdle?
Toothpaste?

Wow, what great suggestions! I knew coming here would help us find a better name. I looked up what we have so far:

Unfortunately Reign Storm is taken.

I also agree Wasabi is a great name for a thoroughbred. Unfortunately it is taken as is Wasabi Cat, Wasabi King, Wasabi Slew, in fact a whole bunch of Wasibi horses. I haven’t check the bloodlines of these, but there is a nice sire Tabasco Cat, and many of his kids are Habanero, and other spices. I love the idea though.

Stormy Knight, also taken.

Nobility Kitty, is not taken, and I am betting will get some votes.

And as for Freedom Cat, we were running French Reign during the Freedom Fries time. We jokingly started calling her Freedom Reign instead, but after a while started thinking that would be a nice name for one of her babies when the time came.

Cats Rule is also taken, but an adjective added to that might work. And Stormy Reign is taken, but another word added to it may work as well. Like Gabby’s Stormy Reign without the spaces.

Storm Queen is taken.

Aristocat would be perfect, but it is taken. Maybe add a word like Reigning Aristocat.

Sir Ender is hysterical. If we had a colt, that would be great. I will submit it anyway. Maybe find a way to make it for a filly like Miss Sir Ender, or Sir Ender Girl, Girl Sir Ender…We will work on that one!

Lady Reigns is taken, so Lady Reign may be too close for them to allow. Lady Cat also taken, but might be able to add a word or two, Lady Gabriella Cat, or something.

There is a Gallic Gal, but Gallic Gabby might work. French Reign’s 2006 baby was born on St Patrick’s Day, so we had thought we would go Irish with her. Lots of Gaelic’s already, but that would be fun to have a Gallic and a Gaelic something as sisters.

Prince of Cats is surprisingly not taken. Would be great for a colt.

Cabbage is taken, poor horse! Girdle, still available, and I imagine will be for some time.
And Toothpaste, still available, but there is a poor Toothless horse out there somewhere.
Not familiar with the Spike Jones reference though.

But I have bet on a Spineless Jellyfish a few times ( and won), Toaster Boy and Knucklehead ran against each other I believe. And my own user name is a nice hard knocking horse who made me cringe when I first saw the name. But once I learned its meaning, I thought it clever, but a little mean. The lower level tracks are referred to as the Grits and Hard Toast circuit, because at the level that is all the trainers and jockeys can afford to eat. My namesake did much better than the expectations of those who named him and came very close to running the Kentucky Derby, earning quite a bit of money along the way. Unfortunately he was gelded ( again low expectations I guess) so I won’t get to see what those who bred to him might have done with his name.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I am putting the list together and will keep checking back. I will definately keep you posted on Gabby’s progress. Although we joke about her winning the Derby, we mostly breed for Turf, which are generally more sound, later developing horses. We take the time to let our horses fully mature before serious training to avoid ruining young legs. So most of our horses don’t even make their first starts until well into their third year. Gabby may be an exception, as she is smaller boned and the vet thinks she may be ready for training much earlier than our others. Her breeding makes her quite versatile. Some of her “siblings” and “cousins” are champs at sprinting, routing, dirt and turf.

It looks as if running on artificial surfaces is the way of the future in racing, and she should be perfect for that as it has been playing as a surface somewhere between dirt and turf. So far it is has shown to cut down on injuries to the horses legs, so if that is the case I expect all the tracks will switch over to it in time. That will completely confuse the handicappers and breeders for a while, but if we can keep our horses healthy, it will be worth the switch.

Thanks again, I will keep you posted on how the voting goes…

From one of his songs, a racing announcer: “Cabbage is coming in ahead–Girdle is squeezing in a little behind–Toothpaste is being squeezed out on the rail–”

Well, the Queen of Cats is of course Grimalkin, “So dignified in all her paces,/She seem’d a pupil of the Graces!/There never was a finer creature/In all the varying whims of Nature” (“Mistress Gurton’s Cat” by Mary Darby Robinson ).

Ghostzapper? No shit!
Folks, this might be as close to celebrity as SDMB has been in a while.

So the background is French Reign and Sir Cat. Also Miswaki and Storm Cat. I tried to google for a meaning for Miswaki and didn’t find one, but did find the parents Hopespringseternal and Mr. Prospector.

So, how about:

Cloudburst
Comtess
Comtess Minou
Comtess D’espoir (espoir = hope)
Countess Chatterly (Chatters – Gabby)
Chatters On
Thundercat (reign – rain)
Thunderclap
Rolling Thunder
Queen Cloud
Queen Cee

Timeless Tickler
Heavenly Hope
Silver Tongued Devil

Kitten Caboodle
Chat-a-box
cat in le chapeau
What a shame that Knight Mare is not allowed. What’s the reason for that, exactly?

Would Knightmare be allowed? Or Nightmare

It seems that Nightmare is taken, but Knightmare is free.

Lady/kitty/Miswake/Wasabi **Marmalade. ** Wasabi just rocks as a horse name.So does Marmalade/voodoo and dejavu. Very french and pronouncable. If I do say so my self.

And since I’m bored, I babelfished my username: Shirley Ujest and came up with:
**sûrement, vous plaisantez **. No, I can’t really pronunce it, but hey, it looks swell.
