Two Thoroughbreds Officially Named by Dopers!!

I apologize for the delay in letting you know the results from this thread asking for help with naming my group’s yearlings. Time to Name the Yearlings! Your help is requested. - In My Humble Opinion - Straight Dope Message Board

We did the voting process a bit differently than we had in the past, and it took much longer than usual. We also had several of the names we submitted to the Jockey’s Club for approval be denied.

But our yearlings now are officially named and registered thoroughbreds. And two dopers now have bragging rights!

So here is the run down.

Our gorgeous Cactus Ridge-Taxquenya by Kris S. colt is now Cacto Canto. That means Cactus Ridge in Spanish. His barn name will be C.C.

The yearlings have recently been broken ( A much gentler process than it sounds, I promise. They have been handled by humans from the day they were foaled, so a rider getting up on their backs was not very tramatic.) These shots are from the first day of being ridden. Now that they are broken, they will be schooled a bit more, then turned out until the their bones finish developing. They won’t start any serious training until the vet x-rays them and gives us the OK so we can be sure their bodies are ready.

Here is Cacto Canto

The winning name for the Trust N Luck-French Reign by Miswaki, who was born on St Patrick’s Day, was Irish Reign. Evidently that sounded too much like Irish Rain, who is a horse currently running, so was it was rejected. She is now Seventeenshamrocks.

The name chosen for the Black Minnaloushe -Claire’s Jade by Jade Hunter, was very close to one suggested by Revenent Threshold. In fact both names made it to the final voting. **Revenent Threshold ** suggested Midnight Gem. The winner was Midnight Jewel.

Now for the Doper named thoroughbreds. The original name we submitted for the Posse-Charming Mom by Arch was Posse Whipped. The Jockey Club told us that was in poor taste, so rejected it. Next we tried Posse Galore, also rejected. So the third name, submitted by It’s Not Rocket Surgery, was accepted. She is now officially Playing Posse.

And the last of the group, our Sweetsouthernsaint-Conway Kitty by Miswaki was named by NajaNivea. She is now Sweetsouthernkitty.

( I don’t know why Playing Posse isn’t up yet, but I will keep checking)

So congratulations to **It’s Not Rocket Surgery ** and NajaNivea! You have officially named a registered thoroughbred! How many of your friends can claim to have done that? If you PM me with an email address, I will give some additional information about these horses if you are interested in following them. And like Snooooopy, who named one last year, I will update you when they get ready to race, so you can watch. You are invited to join us at the race, or I can let you know how to watch online, if you aren’t anywhere near a track or have a horseracing channel.

And an update on Snooooopy’s No Sir Ender Cat. She had just started in training at Churchill Downs with one of the country’s top trainers, Eddie Kenneally. She was doing well, then started to decline. When the vet checked her out, he found she had an equine virus. Not anything fatal, or contagious, fortunately. She is receiving treatment for it and is expected to make a full recovery. But if the virus has left her weak, or training in anyway would harm her, we will retire her and find another career she would be more suited for. So we are just waiting to see how she does. She is comfortable and doing well now. Here is a picture of her when she was at the training center for initial training, last August. She is the one in the middle.

And Snooooopy, since I last emailed you, I have lost that email account and now have a new email. Since No Sir Ender Cat won’t be making her expected debut this fall at Churchill Downs as we had hoped, I will update you her progress.

And here are the newly named fillies:
Playing Posse on the left, and Seventeenshamrocks on the right:

And this is Sweetsouthernkitty on the left and the Midnight Jewel on the right.
http://i20.tinypic.com/10p1sud.jpg

And these things change as the horses mature, but right now the smart money on who will be the star of this year’s crop would be split between Sweetsouthernkitty and Playing Posse. Playing Posse’s sire is the number one freshman sire in the country, so that looks good for her. And Sweetsouthernkitty has been getting rave revues from the folks who broke her, ( they also broke Curlin, who will be voted this year’s Horse of the Year, so they know a thing or two about good horses). So right now it looks as if the two Doper named horses really have potential.

Thanks to all who submitted names. Since we have had winning names two years in a row from this board, I will be back next year for help again. If anyone wants to get an early start, here are the weanlings that will need names next:
Van Nistlerooy - Copra by Jade Hunter filly

Powerscourt - French Reign by Miswaki colt

Pembroke - Nothern Streak by Lucky North colt

Act of Duty - Conway Kitty by El Prado filly

Great Pyramid - Charming Mom by Arch filly

Full Mandate - Claire’s Jade by Jade Hunter colt

Thanks again, and congrats to **It’s Not Rocket Surgery ** and NajaNivea

I’m a bit confused by the current weanlings’ names. The “by” indicates the name of the stallion who fathered it? Or the mare who carried it? I can’t remember. What are the two names that precede it? One is the other parent, what’s the other?

Sorry about that. I forget this stuff isn’t something everyone is familar with.

It works like this for this colt:
Powerscourt - French Reign by Miswaki colt

Powerscourt is the sire (dad). French Reign is the dam ( mom). Miswaki is the dam’s sire.

When we want to refer to the dam we say, French Reign is ***out of ** * Run to Reign. ( Because she was literally out of her)

When we refer to the sire we say, French Reign is by Miswaki. So depending on whether a foal is by or out of a certain horse, you can tell if that horse was the sire or the dam.

In looking for names, tradition has us pay tribute to the sire. If the dam’s name can be combined with it, that is ideal.

Hope that helps.

Woohoo! Congratulations, It’s Not Rocket Surgery and NajaNivea! (Good timing, I was just wondering within the last 2-3 days if the horse naming had finished yet.)

So, is it okay for me to start posting scads of names again? (I swear, the naming threads bump up my posting rate almost as much as Mafia does.) And, when do we get to see pics of the new foals?

For people who don’t feel like clicking over to the previous thead:
Look here to see if a name is taken.
Look here for naming guidelines.
Look here for more pedigree info.

Cool! Be sure to let us Bluegrass dopers know if they’re at CDX or KEE, because any excuse to get to the track is a good one.

Woohoo! I won!

I missed this thread when it was first posted. I also never answered Grits And Hard Toast when she mentioned I was the first Doper who seemed to know the origin of her name. It’s not surprising - I’m a big racing fan, and also have an excellent memory for stakes winners. I knew that Grit’s namesake had won the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream - I did have to look up the year (1999) in my Racing Almanac that I won, uh, answering horse racing trivia at River Downs.

Anyway, I was thisclose to naming a horse owned by my then-boss a few years ago. He had a daughter of the sire Green Alligator, but went with the name Gator Maid (yawn) instead of my suggestion, Not A Croc!

But I am happy about Playing Posse, and will put her directly into Stable Mail. Hopefully I will get to see her run in person!

Partial Victory! Jewel does sound a lot better than Gem, I have to say.

Hooray! I, too, missed the thread the first time around. Unfortunately, I’m at the wrong end of the country to be able to come to the races, but would love to watch online. Also, could I beg a copy of a winner’s circle photo when and if?

A bit late, but a naming question: What’s with “wordsruntogether”, such as Seventeenshamrocks or Sweetsouthernkitty? I don’t see anything about it in the naming guidelines.

This one screams out for a reference to the court of one of the French kings – [del]is there a list of “taken” names we can browse to make sure we’re not picking a duplicate?[/del] I’m thinking of something like Sun King’s Court. It’s a shame that the most famous of French Courts (Versailles) is likely to be mispronounced whenever the horse runs in Kentucky.

Found it. Thanks.

Submissions for the new crop:

Van Nistlerooy - Copra filly: Well, Van Nistlerooy is a soccer player, and Copra is dried coconut meat. So, Soccer Nut.

Pembroke - Northern Streak colt: The dam made me think of streaking. I suggest Naked And Broke.

Act of Duty - Conway Kitty filly: Not gonna explain this one - Litter Box.

Great Pyramid - Charming Mom filly: Surprisingly, Cheops has not been used.

Full Mandate - Claire’s Jade colt: Mandate of Heaven

There’s an eighteen character limit to the name. Removing spaces is a way around that limitation.

:smack: Ahhhhh. You see, I read it as eighteen letters.

Let’s see what leaps to mind here:

Van Nistlerooy - Copra filly: It’s silly, but – Copracavana

Pembroke - Northern Streak colt: Broke The Streak

Act of Duty - Conway Kitty filly: Conway Dwitty (remember Conway Twitty?)

Great Pyramid - Charming Mom filly: Great Mom? Hoping she’ll become a good broodmare

Full Mandate - Claire’s Jade colt: Joyful Jewel

I realize this is not pertinent to the thread, but it cracked me up to hear of a horse named “Hoof Hearted”.

At the end of the race the announcer was screaming;

Hoof Hearted!
Hoof Hearted!

Say it out loud and it sounds like “Who Farted!”

Glad you found this thread! I wondered why I didn’t receive any replies. I figured that the winners just weren’t as excited as I was about having their names chosen. Glad to hear from you all, and that you will be following “your” horses.

Here are some pictures of the just turned two year olds. They have their winter coats and are looking a bit rough now, but we are very pleased with how they are coming along. From left to right: Playing Posse, Seventeenshamrocks, Midnight Jewel, and Sweetsouthernkitty.

http://i15.tinypic.com/8eglr9d.jpg

Here is a shot of Playing Posse:

http://i8.tinypic.com/81tcklt.jpg

And another shot of Sweetsouthernkitty.

http://i10.tinypic.com/8fxgaao.jpg

Sweetsouthernkitty continues to impress all who meet her. She is the “pack leader” and without her being pushy or bossy, she bends the others to her will. This could come in handy on the track, as some horses can give the others “the eye” which causes the others to back down at let the natural leader take or keep the lead.

And Playing Posse’s sire, Posse, finished his freshman sire year with a record breaking 7 stakes winners, very impressive. That crop is now three, and eligible for the Kentucky Derby. Of the appoximately 36,000 foals born in North America in 2005, Posse has two that are listed on most everyone’s early Derby conterders list, Kodiak Cowboy and Lantana Mob. Should either of those two make it to the Derby, we will be very excited for Playing Posse! Another sign of what a strong sire Posse is, is that we paid $10,000 for his stud fee in 2006. His fee is now $30,000, so that is encouraging as well.

So things continue to look for for these two nice fillies. Sweetsouthernkitty looks to start her training in February. We always wait until the vets give the ok that our young horses’ joints are mature, and can handle training. Unfortunately many young horses are ruined by starting them too soon. But Sweetsouthernkitty has matured early, and will start lightly jogging. We will take it very slowly, and see how it goes.

Playing Posse looks to be on the other end of the spectrum, a late developer. She will be turned out for the winter, and in March or April we will take another look at her. If the vet ok’s it, then she will start training. If not, we will keep checking on her every couple of months.

I actualy preferred Midnight Gem, thinking Jade was more of a gem than a jewel, but not really sure. But the nickmame Jewel does fit this girl, so it works for her.

Well, we will think positively. Should Sweetsouthernkitty do well, which we expect as this point, ( no one ever committed suicide with an unraced two year old in the barn…) she could be running anwhere from Saratoga in New York to Santa Anita in California, for the big races. So until we have reason to think differently, we can dream. And for now it is a “when” not “if” on the Winner’s Circle photo, so you will most definately get one!

Playing Posse at this point we think will end up on the Kentucky Circuit, which will work well for It’s Not Rocket Surgery! My early guess is she will make her first start during the time that Turfway Park is running, which happens to be near him. So hopefully he will be able to join us. If she doesn’t make the TP meet, then Keeneland and Churchill Downs are next, and not too far.

Actually I had wanted the name Versailles Cat for the Sir Cat-French Reign filly. The track announcers in Kentucky would be torn in trying to figure out which way to pronounce it. If they saw she was a KY bred, and bred near Versailles Kentucky, then they would feel pronouncing it the Kentucky way was correct. But they would know around the rest o f the country, others would think they they were goofy for pronouncing it wrong. If they pronounced it the French way, then they would know the folks in Kentucky would think they didn’t know much about Kentucky Horse Country, and would look silly to them. So I kind of liked the idea that the name would cause confusion. But you are right, Versailles is perfect for Powerscourt and French Reign. Unfortunately it is taken, but we could add another word to it…and unless the other word was French, we would likely be pronouncing it the Kentucky way, making others cringe…

There was a popular Derby horse a few years ago named Sun King, so I don’t know if we would want to use Sun King in the name. But taking a look at other famous French Courts is a good idea. Ideally the name would also have an Irish reference in there as well, to give tribute to where the name Powerscourt came from.

Thanks so much for those new suggestions! I like several already. Soccer Nut is very clever. Naked and Broke and Broke the Streak both work well for owning horses. I will write them all down, and save them for when we start the process up again…but you all have first dibs on those.

Hoof Hearted is legendary in racing. Not so much as a race horse, but that her name got by the Jockey Club. Truly a classic!

And an update on No Sir Ender Cat, that doper Snooooopy named. A few weeks before she was to make her first start at Churchill Downs, she required treatment for an equine virus. We were told she would have 50-50 chance of being able to return to racing. She has gone through treatment, and has just returned to training. We are taking it very slow with her, getting a feel for how healthy she is now. So far, so good…Here she is last week:
http://i3.tinypic.com/73abxqb.jpg

http://i5.tinypic.com/6z4o3kz.jpg

You can see in the second picture, her rider is fighting to keep her from running all out. She evidently doesn’t think she needs to take it as slowly as we do. But we will be careful with her. If it should be that she can’t race safely, then we will retire her. She would make an excellent show horse, or with her breeding, someone might want to use her as a broodmare. Either way, we will make sure she is well taken care of.

Thanks again for your interest! And I will keep you all up to date with reports of how these girls are doing. By Churchill Downs’ spring meet, we could have some runners, and can perhaps have a mini dopefest in the paddock!

Numbers added by me, to make things simpler.

In order of coming up with them…

  1. Claire’s Man Date
  2. Charmed Denial (or Charmed De Nile)
  3. Cop Van
  4. Pouvoir Français ? Can you name them in French? French Power hasn’t been used yet, though.
  5. Cat’s Duty
  6. North Wanaka (according to wikipedia, Pembroke, New Zealand is the former name of the town now called Wanaka!)
The Percival Pembroke is also a type of plane, so Lucky Percival, or PercivaloftheNorth

Clearly I’m not very good at this!

I don’t have many ideas yet, but here’s my first go at this year’s crop

Van Nistlerooy - Copra by Jade Hunter filly
Jade Thistle

Powerscourt - French Reign by Miswaki colt
Cour Royale (French for Royal Court; Royal Court being taken already)
Le Roi du Soleil (although Le Roi Soleil is taken, and this one might be too close)
Waki Prince
Sun King’s Court

Pembroke - Nothern Streak by Lucky North colt
Break for Luck or Break for North
Broken Streak
Northern Break

Act of Duty - Conway Kitty by El Prado filly
Kitty Acts or Acting Kitty
El Gatito (The Kitty in Spanish)
Dutiful Cat, Dutiful Kitten or Dutiful Kitty

Great Pyramid - Charming Mom by Arch filly
Egyption Charms, Egypt’s Charm or Charms of Egypt
Egypt’s Daughter, Egyptian Daughter or Daughter of Egypt

Full Mandate - Claire’s Jade by Jade Hunter colt
Hunter’s Mandate

I just noticed that Jurph already suggested Sun King’s Court. :smack:

Hmm…based on the New Zealand thing, I’ll add:
Pembroke - Nothern Streak by Lucky North colt
Lucky Kiwi
