Time to Name the Yearlings! Your help is requested.

OK, it is time to name the yearlings. Last year a Doper, Snooooopy, submitted one of the names that was voted on by the co-owners and became the official racing name for one of our fillies. So I am back again for suggestions. This year we have five to name, so starting a bit earlier.

If you want to check and see if your great suggestion has already been taken, here is the site to check: http://www.registry.jockeyclub.com/tjc/namesbook.cfm

And here is the list of guidelines: Jockey Club Interactive Registration

And for those interested in the full pedigrees, you can look up the sire and dam here: http://www.pedigreequery.com/

As a rule, our group tends to prefer names that reference others in the pedigree. At this point it helps us remember who is out of and by whom. But this year we have a few yearlings with characteristics that make them unusual, so I will try to mention those things as well because a name could center around that as well.

And if your name suggestion is rather clever, (which is a plus!) please include the explanation. For example, one of the suggestions for the Black Minnaloushe/ Claire’s Jade by Jade Hunter filly is Heirloom Rose. At first glance it would seem that name really isn’t based on the filly’s sire or dam, but it is. Black Jade is the name of an heirloom rose.

Thanks again to all who help by submitting names. This year we will be going about this a different way. Once we have the initial list of suggestions for each yearling, the co-owners will vote to eliminate names in several rounds. Sort of an American Idol version for naming these future stars in racing.

Here they are:

    http://i19.tinypic.com/6fj5pq1.jpg
Other things to consider…He was the only colt in two crops. We had 7 fillies and only one colt in those two years. Cactus Ridge was bred and owned by country singer Toby Keith., which opens it up for all sorts of songs.

Filly by Trust N Luck–**French Reign ** by Miswaki.

http://i9.tinypic.com/6blajio.jpg
http://i8.tinypic.com/6gx3ol1.jpg
Other things to consider…. She was born on St Patrick’s Day and our club as a rule likes all things Irish. My guess is that the winning name will have something to do with being Irish. Many of Trust N Luck’s kids have a lot of white. Our girl really stands out with those four white socks and white face.

3.Filly by Sweetsouthernsaint,–**Conway Kitty ** by El Prado.

http://i19.tinypic.com/540pkdx.jpg
http://i17.tinypic.com/4l42wlu.jpg
Other things to consider:…She does have that unusual marking on her face which we have used to identify her. And she is a Florida bred, which makes her southern. (There would be some debate about a KY bred being southern.)

  1. Filly by Black Minnaloushe– **Claire’s Jade ** by Jade Hunter.
    http://i13.tinypic.com/4t5ojg6.jpg
    http://i18.tinypic.com/5yrmqmf.jpg]
Other things to consider:…. can’t think of anything…poor girl.

  2. Filly by PosseCharming Mom, by Arch.
    http://i16.tinypic.com/4vh9gmx.jpg
Other things to consider….Since Posse is doing so well as a new sire, this may be one that folks want “Posse” in the name, or something very related to Posse. In fact Posse is doing so well, you can add up the earnings from the next two new sires and Posse’s kids have still earned more. I am guessing there will be a lot more Posse’s to name in the future, so if there is a good Posse name, I hope we can think of it first. Our favorite names so far that won’t likely be approved are Posse Whipped and Posse Galore. But we may just try and see.

Thanks so much for any suggestions. I will take the ones from here and submit them to the voting co-owners. I will also update you all as we narrow the lists down, so you can see if your name made the cut. If a name you submit should win, you get big time bragging rights, the horse’s first Winner’s Circle photo, and if you happen to live nearby like Snoooopy does, you will be invited to join us in the paddock and Winner’s Circle if you can attend a live race. And I will let you know when the horse races so you can follow their career.

Good luck! I hope we can add some more Dopers to the list of folks who have named a thoroughbred racehorse. That would make a nice entry in a thread about things you never thought you would do!

I ALMOST named a horse before - my old boss had a daughter of Green Alligator about whom he asked for names. But he went with Gator Maid (yawn) instead of my ideas, Ally McGator and Not a Croc.

Anyway, and off the top of my head:

The Cactus Ridge: Death And Cactus
The Trust N Luck: Luck O Irish
The Sweetsouthernsaint: Loretta Linament
The Posse: Posse Tive

I named a horse once on another message board. A poster wanted a Tolkein-themed name beginning with T. My winning entry was “There and Back Again”! Somewhere out there, there’s a registered QH with my name on it!

Here goes

I like Filly #4. She has a wise look about her. How about:
Black Cat Hunter
Black Jade Hunter
Jade on the Prowl
Hunting the Green
Green-eyed Hunter
Black Jade

Filly #2
Lucky Rain
Lucky Irish Rain
Queen of Luck
Queen’s Luck
Trust the Princess

Filly #3
Dixie Kitten

Filly #4
Posse’s Charmer
Charming Collonade
Posse’s Charisma

Colt by Cactus RidgeTaxquenya by Kris S
Taxen Saguaro. Mainly because I know someone who pronounces “Texas” and “Texan” in such a way that they sound almost like “Taxes” and “Taxen”. And a saquaro is a type of cactus, of course.
Hmmm… Did you know that there’s a town named Cactus, Texas? Can you name a horse after a town?
Cactus Due? (Although that might work better for a girl as “Cactus Dew”.)

Filly by Trust N Luck–**French Reign ** by Miswaki.
Well, “Luck O The Irish” is already taken, according to your link to the name book, but how about Luck O The French? It takes into account both of the parents’ names and most people should get the reference back to the original phrase.
Other thoughts: (1) Trust In Eire
(2) According to MSN Encarta, “Erin Go Bragh” means “Ireland Forever”; accordiing to WikiAnswers, it’s a misspelling of the Gaelic phrase meaning “Ireland The Beautiful”. If the second is true (or even if it isn’t), how about Erin Go Amharach? (According to this online irish dictionary, “lucky” = amharach, adhuil, sona, seanmhar, sonais or adih; no idea how to pronounce any of them, though.) The intent being “Ireland the Lucky”. (Per your link to the guidelines “When a foreign language name is submitted, an English translation must be furnished to The Jockey Club.” so this suggestion might need a run by a Gaelic speaker.
Filly by Sweetsouthernsaint,–**Conway Kitty ** by El Prado.
Just the obvious ones come to mind: Sweetsouthernkitty, Sweet Kitty, Southern Born Kitty…darn, Dixie Kitty is taken.
How about Cat O Nine Clouds (play off “Cat o’ Nine Tails” crossed with “Cloud Nine”)?
And now the “Southern Born Kitty” name is making me think of the song “My Home’s in Alabama” *which has the line “Southern Born and Southern Bred” but I can’t make a name out of the lyrics. Maybe later.
Cat of Dixie maybe?

Filly by Black Minnaloushe– **Claire’s Jade ** by Jade Hunter.
Hmmm…Minna-Jade?

Filly by PosseCharming Mom, by Arch.
It’s Not Rocket Surgery!'s suggestion made me think of “Posse Tively Charming” but that’s too long. :frowning: How about Posse Tive Charmer?
Otherwise, I just came up with Posse Girl or Posse Baby. Maybe Posse Tive Girl or Posse Tive Mama?

Accentuate the Posse Tive.

Gaelic Girl

Cactus Taxes

Couple more suggestions:

  1. Colt by Cactus Ridge–Taxquenya by Kris S.
    Tax -> IRS -> Revenue-ers -> Moonshine -> Cactus Moonshine

  2. Filly by Trust N Luck–French Reign by Miswaki.
    French Shamrock or French Clover
Trèfle Irlandais, which is “Irish Clover” in French

3.Filly by Sweetsouthernsaint,–Conway Kitty by El Prado
Purrfect Saint
Purrfectlysouthern (or Perfectly Southern if you want a space)
Kitty Sweets

  1. Filly by Black Minnaloushe-- Claire’s Jade by Jade Hunter.
    Hunting the Black
    Dark Hunter
    Dark Claire
Jade To Black (inspired by the phrase “fade to black”)
Minnacher Jade (semi-phonetic spelling of “miniature” to play off the “Minna” in “Minnaloushe”)

  2. Filly by Posse–Charming Mom, by Arch.
    Im-Posse-Ble Charm

Filly 2 --Trust N Luck–French Reign by Miswaki.
Lucky Chrome (do they call white markings “chrome” in the TB world too?)
French Chrome
Take Your Chances(ie trust in luck)
Prepared Mind (chance favors the…)
French N Frisky
Lady Lyonnais (Credit Lyonnais is a prominent french bank… bank= alternate meaning of “trust”)

Horse #1
Canyousingasong – “Can you” rhymes with “quenya” + Toby Keith’s vocation

Horse #2
Brain Trust – It’s “brain” rhymes with “reign” + “trust.” I suppose you could also go with Breign Trust, but does that look unwieldy?

Miss Beckett – You have the “Miss” as in “Miswaki” + “Beckett” as in Samuel Beckett, the Irish-born writer who wrote primarily in, you guessed it, French. Did I work hard to tie those two countries together, or what? (I actually was recalling a scene from an old Head of the Class episode.) It’s a nice, homey-sounding name that even matches the gender of the horse, which I didn’t do the last time around.

I’ll have to come back to this later for the other three.

Now that I have the time, I’ll give the explanation for the one name on my list that requires it - Loretta Linament.

Her dam is Conway Kitty. That’s probably a play on country singer Conway Twitty. He was famous for his duets with Loretta Lynn. Plus it works well with the sire, Sweetsouthernsaint.

The “Linament” part is a little corny, but I know the Jockey Club won’t let you name a horse for a living person without that person’s permission.

Now a question for Grits n Hard Toast - did you own your Thoroughbred namesake?

I knew I forgot one of my ideas!

For the Posse filly, what about Playing Posse ?

Of course, it’s a play on the term “playing possum”.

Colt No. 1:

Beerdrinkinhorse: He’s owned by Toby Keith, who recorded “Beer for my Horses.” If that’s not possible under the Jockey Club’s Rule 6(F)(3), then Tobys Beer Drinker.

Tax Rate Spike: Cacti are spiky, and we get the “Tax” in there. Or just Tax Spike.

Filly No. 2:

Monagasque: “French” and “Luck” connote Monte Carlo to me. Residents of Monte Carlo are from the French-speaking principality of Monaco, and are known as Monagasques.

Lucky Leroi: “Le roi” is French for “the king.” Put the words together and pronounce it as “Leroy.”

Filly No. 3:

Florida Panther: You get the breeding state, plus the cat reference.

Countrymusicsuite: Plays off Conway Twitty’s style of music and “Sweet.”

Going to post these for now, but will be back with possibilities for the last two fillies…

Okay, here are my thoughts for names for the final two fillies:

Filly No. 4:

Claire Black Jade.
Jade Miner.

No explanations here–they should be pretty obvious.
Filly No. 5:

Mama’s Gang, Mama’s Hunters: No “posse” in the names, but what the hell.
Posse Da Question, Possed Portrait: Both play on “posse” for “pose.”
Charmer’s Posse
Posse Billi Tees: The “Billi” puts a feminine spin on it, and think of the possibilities!
I’ll try to come up with more…

  1. Filly by Trust N Luck–French Reign by Miswaki.
I’m having fun with this one now. Thinking about luck led me to clovers before, and now to horseshoes. According to the previously linked Irish dictionery, “shoes” in Gaelic is “broga”. So: Broga (shoes), Mo Broga (my shoes), Eireann Broga/Erin Broga (“Irish shoes” Gaelic spelling/Americanized spelling). Ties into luck, irish-ness and touches slightly on the white stockings.

3.Filly by Sweetsouthernsaint,–Conway Kitty by El Prado
Mason Dixon Feline or Mason Dixon Lion
Rebel Kitty?

  1. Filly by Posse–Charming Mom, by Arch.
Playing off the “law enforcement” aspect of a posse, without actually including the word posse (some of these sound more like colt names than filly names, though): Charming Outlaw, Charming Fugitive, Renegade Charm, Charmed Marshal or Charming Marshal, Charm of the Law.

Filly by Posse–Charming Mom, by Arch: InfinitePosseblity or InfinitelyPosseble

Filly by Black Minnaloushe-- Claire’s Jade by Jade Hunter: Thecatandthemoon, Nearestkinothemoon, Crystal Claire
Filly by Sweetsouthernsaint,–Conway Kitty by El Prado:… I got nothin’, but I love Mason Dixon Feline!
Filly by Trust N Luck–French Reign by Miswaki: Waki Luck, Luck Reigns, Rein N Luck

Colt by Cactus Ridge–Taxquenya by Kris S: Cactus Kris, Prickly Kris, Spiny Ridge

Help! I can’t stop!

Filly by Trust N Luck–French Reign by Miswaki: Knee Deep In Luck, Blarney N Luck, Miss Go Go Boots

Succulent Teleri, from Cactuses being a succulent-type plant and Teleri being a race of Tolkein elves (from which Quenya is a language). Though it does make it sound like you’re going to eat the poor horse…

Emerald Dynasty?

Midnight Gem. Apparently one of the meanings of the name Claire is “bright, shining, clear” (taken from Wikipedia, mind you). With that in mind, how about Dark Clarity? Something a bit more fitting to her colouring might be Shining Crimson (although I kinda like Flashing Crimson more. Seems more horse-racey, but doesn’t really fit with her breeding).

Neat. Just looking them up in the pedigree books, and Colt 1 is descended from Secretariat and Northern Dancer (thrice)! A couple of the few horses i’ve actually heard of.

Ha. They’ve all pretty much got Northern Dancer in there somewhere, and Black Minnaloushe has Secretariat too. Are these impressive lineages? I don’t know enough about horses to say.
