Please help with computer problem

The problem I’m having with my computer is my browser won’t work. I open Internet Explorer and type in my destination. What happens, is it shows up as the pesky " This Page Cannot Be Displayed" page. I know I’m connected to the internet because my ICQ and MSN messenger works. It’s just that the internet browser has gone weird on me.

I’m using Windows XP. I’m not sure what I can do to fix my computer because I’m under an admin (my brother). This has happened before, but I had no idea what was going on because my brother fixed it. Now, he has decided to become an ass and not fix it, so I’m using another computer to seek help!

HELP ME!

And thanks in advance to anyone who helps!

I had this happen to me too, and the only way I could fix it was to use a restore point and go back a week or so. There must be a setting that can be changed, but damn if I could find it.

Restore point? I’m sorry, but you’re talking to a computer illiterate here. All I know how to do is turn on the computer and play with it. I don’t even get the simplest tech terms. Sorry if you have to explain everything…

Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Choose a date before your browser problem started and follow the directions from there.

Go to Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then just follow the onscreen prompts. Pick a date with a restore point before the last time you are sure you could access the net with your browser. Warning: this process is slooooow. But it’s a great feature of XP.

Alright!

Thank you!

It seems you have messed up some of the settings. Check your proxy and DNS.

Update: I can’t do system restore because of the admin restrictions. Urban Ranger (or anyone else) how do I check my proxy and DNS?

try changing your proxy server. to change go to tools->internet options then go to the connections tab. in the dial up setting there is a place to change the proxy. i hope this helps

Sneaky way: start your computer in Safe Mode (F8 after POST, the select option number for safe mode). You’ll see a generic Administrator user in addition to the normal ones. Select that one to start up with. If your brother is like most users, he’ll have forgotten to password-protect that one.
