Please, people, with the stealth BUFFY spoilers

I do a movie night for a local youth drop-in center. On Tuesdays. Starting a couple months ago.

I’m the hardest-core Buffy fan on this Board.

My friend who was supposed to be taping Buffy for me did not tape Buffy for me.

Net result of the above facts: I have not yet seen the final five episodes of Buffy.

TWICE this morning, reading NON-BUFFY THREADS, I have come across mentions of what happens in the final episode. One in a thread about Harry Potter slash fiction, and one in a thread about the Matrix murderers.

I don’t object to the discussion of such matters, but please, people, a SPOILER is a SPOILER, no matter WHERE you hide it. Please use the spoiler thingy.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent message.

I think spoiler boxes are all well and good before a program airs to its full audience. Since the Buffy finale broadcast is now more than 36 hours old, though, I think the vast majority of people who wanted to see the show have seen the show.

Not to minimize your frustration, but I think it’s kinda ridiculous to expect posters to forever use spoiler boxes related to a television show that’s already been broadcast.

I’m not asking them not to discuss or mention, just to WARN me, that’s all. Fine, don’t use the boxes. Just a friendly warning, ESPECIALLY when it’s in a non-Buffy thread.

I mean, of course I can take it upon myself to stay out of the Buffy threads till I catch up, but will I have to avoid reading here at ALL until then?

I understand what you’re saying, but you’re asking for references from the last five episodes of Buffy not to be made? That represents, what, roughly two months (since they were interspersing old episodes with new until recently)?

At some point you gotta accept the fact that you’re gonna hear spoilers from broadcasts that old. Especially here.

You do realize that your phrasing makes this sound like Jerry Lewis doing his “spastic” bit, don’t you?

Why don’t you download them? They’re not that hard to find.

Oh, and MODS, I’m not talking filesharing here. The episodes are openly available on ordinary websites. I have a hard time thinking it’s illegal.

Well, The Gaspode, it is illegal. That’s why several of the websites that used to host clips and episodes have been sent nasty letters from FOX and shut down, and while the other websites are “open secrets”.

Oh. Ok.
I just thought that no one made a fuzz about it, since it’s quite in the open.

Nevermind then. I don’t want to encourage theft of copyrighted material.

Carry on.

Yeah, 'cuz it’s such a hassle to be a little judicious.

. . . At the end of the last episode, Buffy wakes up in bed with Suzanne Pleshette.

“A little judicious”? We’re talking about shows from the beginning of April, if memory serves correctly. (Not sure when the last five “new” episodes of Buffy began to be broadcast.)

Hey, did you know Syracuse University won the NCAA basketball tournament? Or is that revealing too much information from early April?

By the way, the war in Iraq is over.

I have to agree that once the episode airs, it is in the public domain, so to speak and fair game for discussion in all threads. For instance, I know that Rueben won “American Idol” last night even though I don’t watch the show. I didn’t seek the information out, I just overheard it in passing.

A parallel: Since I heard The Sopranos was such a good show, I purchased the first 3 seasons on DVD last summer. Great series. Since I don’t fork out the dough to subscribe to HBO, I haven’t seen any episode in Season 4 yet. But I already know that Ralphie bites the bullet in a most gory way… because everyone was discussing it the next day. Am I spoiled? Well, yes, a bit. It would have been nice to find out on my own. However, when the rest of the world is tapping their feet to one tune, I can’t expect them to all stop the music because I’m tapping my feet to another.

I’m not dictating a rule, I’m asking a favor.

Some people will read this and say, “Sure, no problem, easy enough to be considerate.” Others will read this and say,“Nyah nyah, you can’t make me do anything I don’t wanna do.”

Since we’re talking mostly about people who are smart and cultured enough to be Buffy fans, I expect more of the former than the latter. To all of you, thanks in advance for doing me this simple favor.

Hey, what about us poor folks in the UK? We still have three or four episodes to go before the finale!

To be honest, I’ve avoided the thread about the Buffy finale, because I don’t want to know what happens, so it’s nice to have someone (thanks, Lissener!) point out that there’s spoilers in other, unrelated threads. I agree with what Lissener says, it’s fine to abandon using the spoiler boxes in the thread related to the final episode, but it’s a little unfair for people to drop them in willy-nilly into other threads.

At some point, that which was new news becomes old news. Yes, spoilers should not immediately show up in thread titles, or in random threads. However, after some days/weeks we MUST be allowed to speak about things that happened in the past. Unfortunately, lissener won’t be able to see these episodes of Buffy for quite some time, I suspect, given the described circumstances. How long DO we wait before we can discuss these things openly?

Yay! Consideration has a mod’s endorsement, and now has the weight of law!
