Speaking for myself alone – the SDMB offers me a suite of valuable “services” that I believe can’t be found elsewhere on the Net. A piece here and a piece there can be found elsewhere, but not the whole enchilada. So for me, there’s no real alternative to the SDMB.
Others’ mileage may, of course, vary.

That is exactly why I am even mentioning any of this. Some people don’t seem to have any problem with some of our posters just up-and-leaving like that. I’m sorry, but that really bothers me. If everyone goes to the other party (probably not during the next year… but maybe the next? or the next?) then the SDMB is no more.

That’s what I told the hooker but she pointed out that her services were much better than those I could get for free. In the end it was money well spent.
But you’re not being asked to pay to perform a service. You’re being asked to pay to keep the board operational (ie. the expenses occured by the board being run) so that you may continue to enjoy the services.
Who says they are the same services? The may be similar, but the “same”? Not possible, or at least I haven’t found one. For example, I don’t post at another very popular board. That board is free, but in my opinion, it’s not the same. I never felt the same sense of atmosphere that I liked at the SD. I’m willing to pay for the SD because I Can’t get the same service free elsewhere.
And that’s certainly your right. The CR owes it to no one to continue to operate these boards solely at their expense. I don’t believe they have expectations in turning this subscription deal into a for-profit venture and I think they are fully with in their rights to ask people to help defray their costs.

This is an interesting exercise: how we perceive the future of the SDMB seems to be based on our personal reaction to the subscription policy.

Are you talking about the services provided by the SDMB community, or the message board system, itself? Because if it’s the latter, I’m sure I can point you in the direction of the same “look” and “features.”
If you’re talking about the former, then I am with you all the way. But, again, that is not what we will be paying for.
Should we post the positive comments here in this thread, or is there another thread (or 2, or 3…) for that? 
I know that there will be some good things that will come of this. Like many of you, I hope that it all works out to make the SDMB even better than before.

But the SDMB is NOT just “hardware and software”. That’s just what enables it to run, and that’s what we’re being asked to help defray the cost of. If you disagree that this message board is unique and should set apart from other message boards, then we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, and if you think you can have the exact thing that the SDMB gives you somewhere else that doesn’t charge, then this is truly a no-brainer for you. Don’t pay and move on to that other place that is no different than this one.
Woah woah woah… maybe I worded my post a little badly, but we’re saying the same thing. I have been saying from the get-go that the SDMB (read SDMB community) is truly unique, and is priceless. When I say that “similar services” can be found elsewhere, I am only meaning services enabled by software and/or hardware (e.g. searching a database of posts, smilies, etc).
If I came across any other way, it was definitely not my intention, and I apologize. I thought I made myself pretty clear about that, but perhaps not. (Maybe I should lay off the Moutain Dew for the rest of the day…)

They may have the same beer & are a tiny bit cheaper, but they have a different crowd at their party. As long as the “room” is pretty much the same and the cost to get into it is pretty trivial, I’ll be staying. Plus, I think I’ve received at least $5 worth of “content” over the years that it’s totally worth it to me.
Now the cost to get into the “party” might keep enough new blood from joining and drive away enough current “party-goers” that a year from now no amount of $$$$ is worth getting into the room. I’ll worry about that next year (my hopes aren’t all that high).

I posted Admin’s Attitude Towards People Who Can’t Afford $5 this morning. It was shut down ten minutes later. Czarcasm said I should have posted it HERE.
I did. #205 in this thread. Unfortunately, it’s been lost in the shuffle. It would have done quite well on its own. This thread wasn’t about the subscriptions. It was about the Administrator’s attitude towards those who said they can’t pay.
BUT NOW!!! Six hours later, I can count a total of FIVE threads going about the subscriptions. Why was mine (that wasn’t even a complaint about the subscriptions) closed and I was told to post here?
