I want to create a web-site, partly to blog but more importantly to teach myself how to create “really cool” websites. I bought a package from hostingmatters.com which came heavily recommended but I’m having problems getting started and haven’t gotten an answer from customer service after several days. For those who have web-sites, who do you recommend? (I’m looking for affordability, ease of use and good customer service- I have my own domain name that I want to use.)
My experiences:
Avahost.net is decent and cheap.
Earthlink’s hosting is GREAT and overpriced.
By the way, I’m thinking this was more of an IMHO thread, seeing as this is a subjective question that may not yield itself to scientific analysis.
I would recommend http://www.totalchoicehosting.com for hosting. They’re quick to respond, have extremely low prices, and rarely have down-time.
I just signed up with Simple Host (http://www.simplehost.com/) because they offered unlimited space for $7.50 a month. I’m doing a fan concerts website and part of that will be sharing live shows with other fans (I have the artist’s permission). The shows I have are in mp3 and wav format and wavs especially take up a lot of space. When I saw “Unlimited” I couldn’t resist. Plus they had free setup and free domain name. I signed up for a year, which was $90.
I’ve been uploading shows like crazy and haven’t received a “we didn’t really mean unlimited” notice yet. There are a lot of tutorials and help files for getting started. I’ve been pouring through them all.
They offer a lot of services for that $7.50. Just going through Fantastico has been fun. This site gives a good idea of what Fantastico is. I’d never heard of it until last night. There are several different blog programs that you can install. I know nothing about them. I’ve been installing other programs and checking them out, then uninstalling them. Really, just the whole site is like a big giant toy box. I’m very wary of scriptkiddies and crackers though, so I’m not keeping programs on that I don’t plan to use, and I don’t need most of them, but they’re interesting to look at. I’ve never been a “webmaster” before (she says, to angry groans from people who really ARE webmasters and all that entails).
I meant this post to be informational, and not self-serving, but if it looks like the place for you, tell 'em “rhodeshows.com” sent you (“If you refer 3 friends to our service, you’ll get a free year of web hosting!”) My site isn’t/won’t be commercial in any way. It’s a fan site for an independent artist.
This is the 3rd web site I’ve bought recently. I switched from teemingmillions to StartLogic. At teemingmillions, I had been paying almost $500.00 a year for 3 accounts, that came with a total of 1050mbs of space. I got 2 StartLogic accounts for $7.50 a month each, and each came with 2 gigs of space! If I’d found Simple Host first, I wouldn’t have bought the 2 SL accounts. Ah well. Live and learn. Start Logic is good. I haven’t had any problems with them, but they don’t seem to offer as many services as Simple Host.
