The warning to Merijeek should be rescinded.
I agree with Johnny L.A. Merijeeck wasn’t insulting anyone; s/he was just quoting a line from a song persons familiar with South Park were likely to know.
I would be very surprised if it is rescinded. In her posts she explicitly states that she expects it to have some sort of context and then warns him anyway.
Twickster’s post reminds me of the York student who tried to get her professor disciplined for anti-semitism despite missing the actual context of his statements.
Nevertheless, she was wooshed and a warning is not warranted. There might be a case to be made if it were an obscure line from an obscure film; but even then, once the reference was explained a warning in that case should be rescinded. Since the line is one of the best-known lines/songs from a film that is very popular around here, there should be no question about it.
I’m not disagreeing with you, but there’s a world of difference between what should be done and what twickster decides to do.
As a general rule, if a mod sees something that seems out of left field in a Cafe Society thread, perhaps they should google the phrase to make sure it isn’t a reference to the movie/song/book being discussed.
I hope the warning is rescinded.
What York student is that?
Sarah Grunfeld. Her professor gave an example of an unacceptable opinion in his class and he chose the sentence, “All Jews should be sterilized.” as an example. Grunfeld decided he was an antisemite for saying that and tried to wreak media havoc. When everyone pointed out that he was actually against saying such things, she said that regardless of context, the fact that those five words came out of his mouth in that order meant that her outrage was justified.
I agree the warning should be rescinded if discussion of any song lyrics, movie themes, etc. is normally permissible in CS even if they are vulgar, or violent, etc.
But in fairness if unaware it is a song, twickster would have still been searching google for “Shit your fucking face” not “Shut your fucking face” which are quite different. Having no way to know that was a simple typo on the OP’s part, I can understand a bit of a knee-jerk reaction here. But now that it’s all straightened out I think it should be rescinded.
Google is smarter than that. It’ll correct the line for you:
http://www.google.com/search?q=shit+your+fucking+face+uncle+fucker
That said, when context is applied the line wouldn’t even be meant as an insult but proof that South Park has always “gone there” when it comes to swearing. So not only should a warning not have been issued, the joke response was actually on topic.
Merijeek deserves a fucking medal you uncle fuckers.
(“uncle fuckers” IS NOT DIRECTED AT THE MODS by the way)
I know this isn’t a democracy or anything, but I also agree that the warning should be rescinded.
As one who is quoted in the OP, I’ll join the chorus. I don’t think a warning was merited and twicks ought to rescind it.
In a thread about profanity on South Park? That warning was definitely a swing and a miss. Now that it’s been explained, it really should be rescinded. Here’s hoping…
I posted this in the other thread by accident so I’ll put it here as well
In Twix’s defense, if she didn’t know it was a song lyric, she’s not likely to google it. I doubt the mods google every insult they run across ‘just in case’. Having said that, in another thread we ran across something similar where someone (new poster, not a regular) called another poster creepy it went back and forth for a while and eventually one of the regulars said "You’re so fucking special. I wish I was special, but I’m a creep. " and was warned for it by Ellen Cherry which was taken back as soon as she realized it was a Radiohead song…I’d imagine that’s all that’ll happen here.
Unwarranted. Deserves no more than an “oops, nevermind.”
I knew what this thread was about before I even opened it. What everyone else said.
Ooo, look. A bandwagon.
+1
That’s not much of a defense for someone modding in Cafe Society.
Continuing the Rhymer practice of arguing both sides of every issue…
It’s an odd line that doesn’t rhyme. It doesn’t stand out as a song lyric unless you already know it. It’s not reasonable to expect twixster to have seen every movie ever made, much less remember all of them. If Merijeek had written
[South Park movie]
Shut your fucking face, uncle fucker!
[/south park movie]
I expect there would have been no warning.
You will respect twixter’s authoritah!
(and hope she reconsiders)
