I was watching the movie last night when the digital recorder changed channels to tape something else with like 3 minutes left in the movie.
I left off with Paul having told his sugar mamma he was done and he’d moved out, and Holly finding out that her brother Fred was dead. It was months later and we see Holly sitting in her furnished apartment knitting, and she’s invited Paul over.
And that’s all I know… do they get together in the end, or does she marry the Brazilian fella?
They get take a cab ride in the rain, she’s going to the airport, let’s “Cat” out so that he can be free. Something else happens (I forget which of them gets out of the cab first, but eventually they are together in the rain searching for the cat. I think maybe they kiss.
Just like in the book.
Also, the Brazillian marries the tall, drunk model friend. Which actually is from the book. (I’ve only read/watched this thing once, so I can be way off on this.)
They were in the cab going to the airport so Holly could go to Brazil and be another kept woman.
She sets cat free in an alley in the rain, because after all, you can’t own some other living thing. Then he tells her off good.
something like
“you can’t stand living in a cage? Well baby, you’re already in one, except the bars are in your head. You need to come to grips with the fact that people belong to other people.”
He then produces the cheap ring they had evgraved at Tiffany’s and gives it back to her saying he does not want it anymore. He gets out of the cab and pays the cabbie to take her to the airport. He goes back in the pouring rain to search for cat but he can’t find him.
Then Holly shows up in the alley. The look at each other in the pouring rain and she can’t speak to tell him how sorry she is and how wrong she was and how much she is afraid to love him as much as she does. Instead she asks about the cat and then she starts looking. Cat appears and Holly picks him up and cat gets a little smushed as Paul and Holly kiss in the rain.
Paul comes to her apartment for dinner, and she tells him how happy she is with the Brazilian and how they’re going to be married and how happy she is, and how she loves the Brazilian and how happy she is. . . Anyway, the dinner she’s making gets ruined so they decide to go out. When they get back, they’re arrested and taken to the police station for Holly’s association with Sally Tomato. She’s soon let out, but word of the scandal gets back to Jose in Brazil, and he breaks off the relationship. Holly decides to go to Brazil anyway, and gets in the taxi to the airport. Paul joins her, and pulls Cat out of his jacket for her. She asks that the taxi be stopped, and she lets Cat out into the rain. Paul then confronts her with all her flaws and fears and tells her he loves her. Holly won’t listen at first. Then Paul goes to find Cat in the rain, and Holly joins him. At first it seems that Cat is gone, but then they find him in a box in an alleyway, soaking wet. Holly grabs him, crying from sadness and happiness, and she and Paul kiss for the first time with Cat between them.
It’s nothing at all like the book, but I like it anyway. Audrey makes it great.
I always cry pretty badly at this part. Not because she goes back to Paul, but because she finds Cat. I love cats. And I have an orange tabby (Buffy).
BTW, an interesting thing-Audrey Hepburn had grown quite attached to Rhubarb (Cat), and hated having to toss him out in the rain. She said it was one of the worst things she ever had to do in a movie.
