I watched Season 1 of Reaper last year fairly consistently. For whatever reason, I never saw a single episode of Season 2. There were some questions at the end of Season 1, such as – was Sam really the son of the devil? Assuming he wasn’t, why did the devil have such a liking for him? Also, what was up with the guy who Sam thought was his father – he appeared to survive being buried alive, and there were portions of Sam’s contract that he didn’t want Sam to see.
Basically, I’m just looking for answers to the big questions about Sam and his family (to the extent these were answered in Season 2). I don’t really care about the demons of the week, or anything that happens to his friends, unless it relates to Sam.
Gross oversimplification, but Sam really is the son of the devil (as of the end of season two) but this is not a unique situation. The devil has many sons and one of the other ones plays a prominent role in Season 2. Sam seems to be the favorite son, though.
Sam’s father traded Sam’s soul for immortality. Hence his surviving the fire.
Thanks! But if Sam really was the son of the devil, how was Sam’s father-who-raised-him use Sam’s soul as payment in return for his own immortality? If he wasn’t Sam’s real father, what gave him any kind of “ownership” rights on his son’s soul that he could trade away?
There’s also the overarcing plotline of Season 2 of Sam finding a way to get out of his deal with the Devil. Here’s a brief rundown.
Sam learns of a guy named Alan who has previously escaped from his contract with the Devil. A few episodes are spent tracking him down and getting him to tell the secret of how to defeat the Devil. Alan basically says that there are two parts. The first is to challenge the Devil to a game and there’s a second part which he’ll talk about when he’s safe. Alan has to abstain from all forms of temptation and sin (so he took a job on consecrated grounds). Sam et al. pay for him to go to Vatican City (where’s it’s all Holy) and as soon as he lands he’ll give Sam the second part of how one defeats the Devil. But before Alan lands, the Devil has him stop back over in Las Vegas and he’s back in the Devil’s control.
So Sam has his dad travel to Hell to find out the answer. He does, and Nina (a really hot demon) goes to retrieve a scroll with ancient Demon writing on it. Sam’s trying to translate it when Steve the gay demon from season 1 shows up as a Guardian Angel. He translates the scroll saying Sam needs to be the Devil’s reflection. Sam suits up and challenges the Devil to quarters. They tie (which means Sam loses).
So Andi offers up her soul for a rematch. But they get the scroll retranslated and discover that they need to show the Devil his reflection because he’s vain and it will distract him. He only gets in one out of five quarters.
In between the match and Sam’s turn, Steve shows back up and apologizes for mistranslating. Then he promptly breaks Sam’s hand.
Sam loses. Both he and Andi are now under the Devil’s control. Steve claims that God put him up to it because there are big plans in the future for Sam and it needs to work this way.
Those big plans, of course, include cancellation because Steve gets his wings and flies off into the sky, ending Reaper forever (or until it gets picked up by another station).
