So what exactly is this season about? I mean, now that Lucifer is trapped and the yellow-eyed demon storyline is complete, what can they pursue?
It is looking like:
What’s up with Sam and how did he get out of hell? Sam definitely is hiding some things about his time in hell. He knows more about how he got out than he is letting on.
Angel Civil War. This was far less interesting than I was hoping for. Nice to see Castiel again, but he was not very funny or interesting in this episode. Is Raphael going to be the main antagonist now?
I liked the episode, but it was not the best.
I’m glad they destroyed Sam’s car, though. It’s just them and their Impala now.
I thought it was better than the last two, but the tone is still off. I’m always happy to see Cass, but I’d think that he’d be more than a little curious as to why Sam is back, no matter how full his hands are. He did at least bring a little funny though. (My people skills are rusty. :D)
I also think that if you’re going to have an angel buying souls, you’ve got to give a clearer motivation than “souls are powerful”. Demons buy souls to corrupt humans and populate hell, it’s in the job description. What was Balthazar planning to DO with them?
Yep, Balthazar says something to exactly this effect when asked what he would do with them.
One thing I missed - what was with all the “faceless” stuff - the faceless boy they mentioned, and Locusts-for-Brains scratchnig all the faces off his photographs?
It almost looks like they’re setting up a treasure hunt for all the artifacts that have been loosed from heaven, which would make this like Warehouse 13 with the Winchesters on duty. While it would actually be pretty fun to have a crossover (which isn’t likely to happen) I’m hoping they find a different angle soon.
As far as Cas goes; he’s trying to keep things in check in heaven now, and it’s not going well; no wonder he’s stressed and not being himself.
The Sam/Dean dynamic; I’m glad they didn’t just make Dean accept that Sam was back and OK and that everything was fine. Dean still has the skeptical side that makes Dean who he is. You look back at the previous seasons, and yeah, sometimes he was wrong about minor stuff, but Dean always seemed to be right about major stuff, at least his first instincts were right. So at least Dean seems OK, but I agree that Sam seems off. There has to be some reason he got out, and I don’t think it was just because Chuck let him out.
Also glad the cousins were out of this episode. This should really be the Sam and Dean (and Bobby and Cas, and maybe Samuel) show.
The thing that the fangirls have repeatedly brought up is the second half of the episode Mystery Spot, back in season 3. Dean dies, and Sam goes nuts, becoming an uber-focused, highly effective hunter who’s willing to do pretty much anything to bring Dean back, even (possibly) kill Bobby. So I think that the show is trying to tell us that Sam is…off, but we have seen in the past that he is capable, all on his own, of being a pretty ruthless person when Dean isn’t around.
I love this episode best this season mainly because it’s got Castiel. He had so many funny moments. I especially like the “Dean and I do share a more profound bond. I wasn’t going to mention that.”, the air-quotes and the “I need myrrh.” moments.
I look forward to when Crowley guest-stars. And Sam’s #1 fan should make an appearance although I’m not sure the humor would work well with Sam being the way he is right now.
I think by “kid with no face” he meant that the kid was someone they didn’t know at the time. I think it’s a play on the phrase “faceless millions” referring to the general public.
I was impressed with how Jared was able to say so much with very little facial movement.
I thought so, too - Sam didn’t used to strike me as a guy who would buy sex (or need to). And what was that conversation about, “Hell was different for me than for you.” That meant something, I’m sure of it.
I don’t know what to think about Sam and the hooker. Okay, so Sam has meaningless sex with strangers, and it’s weird because that is sooooo out of character for him! He always used to chide Dean for his evil womanizing ways! He is different now! But with a hooker? I feel fairly confident Sam could pick up a non-prostitute in a bar for equally meaningless sex. Of course, you know what they say about prostitution, you’re not paying for sex, you’re paying for them to go away in the morning.
Whatever. If the show was trying to make a point, I’m not really clear on what it was.
I do think the “hell was different for me than for you” bit is going to be a clue into something big.
