Plucked Hair Composition (poss. TMI)

I get ingrown hairs pretty frequently, and have a somewhat obsessive habit of pulling out the ones that bother me. Typically these are the thicker, more wiry hairs that come in among the “normal” hairs. Occasionally I’ll get one from my shoulder, eyebrow, or chin that has a thin, clear coating (texture like gelatin) around its base (everything that was under the skin). Of hairs that really bother me, this coating is present on a very high percentage. I’m interested in reducing its occurrence so that fewer of my hairs will bother me, so hopefully I will be able to reduce the amount of plucking and yanking at irritant hairs that I do.

What is it, and how can I reduce its occurrence?

I think the stuff on the bottom is the follicle, meaning that individual hair won’t be growing back.

All of your hairs have a follicle, but the “hairs that really bother” you, being thicker and stronger, are probably less likely to break off above the follicle when you yank them.

I don’t think it’s the follicle. IINM, the follicle is a hole. You can’t pull out a hole. that’s like digging half of one. I think the clear stuff may be the sebaceous gland, but I may be wrong.

Whatever it is, I’m familiar with what the OP is talking about. And it’s absolutely untrue to say that particular hair is not coming back. I’ve most certainly plucked the exact same hair, complete with root “stuff” attached, countless times. And it doesn’t keep it from coming back. How I wish it did.
