Sweet!
Thiopental Sodium (if still commonly used) is the stuff an anesthesiologist will give you first to make you unconscious: “Say the alphabet backwards”. “Z Y X …”
It’s not really a “truth serum,” but fine, for Carol (attracted to Zosia!), it mostly worked (it is a barbiturate) and messes with “The Others” minds to the point of cardiac arrest if you cannot quite provide the truthy truth.
“How did you like the Heroin?” was a good laugh.
And, as you would expect, Hospitals are big buildings with patients in them. But that’s not important right now.
I had thought Manuosos was some kind of “survivor” deep in a cave or missile silo and, excepting his phone, “off the grid”. I reckon shouting, “Leave me alone!” mostly accomplishes that, yet they’ll bring you food that you’ll discard over cans of purloined dog food. No luck with the ham radio yet.
I didn’t quite catch the meaning of the note he wrote after the last call with Carol. He’s getting title credits, so we’ve not seen the last of him. Unlikely the Spock we needed.
Love the cop car!
ETA: The most likely translation for what Manuosos wrote after Carol’s “Fuck your mother” call: Carol ¿ES Turca? is that she is a “pain”, like a nuisance, or Turkish. Carol said a something like “Yo es Turca” (I am Turkish?) so maybe someone can 'splain that more.
Carol’s name is Carol Sturka. He’s writing down her name as she said on the phone.
Thanks!
That’s the answer. She said “Sturka” and he heard “es Turca”. And I think this was just before the “fuck your mother” call from Carol of Turkey.
I thought he wrote it as Carol e ¿Sturka?
BTW, he seems to know less than Carol about what’s going on. He was scanning the radio dial, trying to find a still-operating radio station.
I enjoyed Jeff Hiller’s role on this week’s episode. Larry definitely comes across like the sort of guy with lots of friends.
As noted above, Tim Keller, the sitting mayor of Albuquerque, appeared in a cameo as himself.
If Apple doesn’t release the entire Carol-on-drugs tape as bonus material, they are missing a big opportunity.
I’m guessing it was 90% ad-libbed by Rhea.
“Thank you for your vote!”
Probably the best throw away line yet.
Right? It was such a great scene. Mostly her reactions to watching herself. The embarrassment, confusion and disgust in herself. Then her ranting about how annoying Zosia is, and then nodding to herself in agreement got a good laugh out of me.
I really hope they release the whole recording at some point. I need to know what she was saying when she was close to the camera wearing the purple hat. It’s gotta be that she was making fun of Moira, the crazy obsessed fan of hers she mentions in her discussion with Larry, that would send her crocheted hats.
I also liked '“Sophomore year was pretty rough.”
I also caught on the whiteboard of ideas for her next book: “Raban dies (again?)”
According to the companion podcast, they had to cut a karaoke rendition of “Come to My Window” from that sequence.
We also learned this week that Carol was sent to a conversion camp by her mother when she was sixteen. The line where Carol notes that the people who ran the place were the worst people she ever met, and that everyone in the world is acting in the same manner that they did now, hit pretty hard.
Indeed. Could also explain why there seems to not be much (if any) family in her life.
They seemed to be stressing in that dialogue references to her mom. No mention of a dad. Wonder if there is a story there that we will be hearing going forward.
And begins to explain the dynamic: Carol, despite putting Zosia in the hospital twice in a row, really cares for Zosia. Why else wave down a 747?
Dunno what Manu-guay is going to contribute. As an actor, dunno who he is. Yet he has a main cast role. It looks like he’s living in a storage container, has no laboratory, and probably should take a flight somewhere. Can’t blame him for being paranoid, yet he has a computer and presumably can use it to translate if he doesn’t trust Microsoft Skype.
Super-smiley guy gave Carol the devastating “well…she ended on page 273 yet did read the last two pages” kind of authentic review. Also cleared up that, at least the minders get names, yet he took a couple seconds to answer his name, “This organism was named…” whatever.
Thinking more about the Bilbao summit held by the English-speaking unjoined, Carol was, I think, the only one bothered by the change. I think most of the others had family members with them. Certainly Lakshmi did with her nine-year-old son. So she could, perhaps, pretend that he’s still there with her and all is normal. Until Carol upset all of that by quizzing the kid about gynecologic exams. Would she, perhaps, be less miserable if Helen was still with her?
And an amusing bit when, after comparing her novel to the works of Shakespeare, they offered to bring her one of the First Folios. They really don’t care about possessions, so they would be happy to bring her the Mona Lisa, or the British Crown Jewels or whatever else strikes her fancy.
Yeh, I’m curious where they’ll take Manuosos’ character. I’m hoping he eventually reaches out to Carol, and they begin to work together, despite his deep distrust and paranoia. She speaks Spanish, so I assume they’ll just communicate that way (his character, like the actor, is Colombian and for whatever reason now lives in Paraguay).
Also, I took a look back at the episode where he writes down her name in his notebook. It’s definitely “CAROL ¿ES TURCA?” so I think that’s a little hidden joke of mishearing her last name, as it would translate to “CAROL, IS SHE TURKISH?”. Also, lots of little comedic bits in this episode, like (as some already mentioned above by others):
• The Mayor actually being the Mayor of ABQ. “Thanks for your vote!”
• The smelly jalopy, then deciding to move to the police cruiser.
• Her asking for the heroin. “See? You put your mind to it and you guys are better than Domino’s.”
• The recording of her while high and her reactions to it.
• When she asks ‘whatever happened to muzak’ in the elevator, and they turn it on.
But man, Carol really can’t help herself of almost killing Zosia. Wonder what’ll it be next episode…
I dunno why the meeting at Bilbao only invited English/ESL folks and why Carol (at least) rejects offers to translate (perhaps trust) - The Others spoke in each immume’s primary language at the airport.
Yet it was clear Manu-guay had no minder present. Also they didn’t know of him till after that meeting. I thought he was scrolling through ham frequencies, giving each about 10 seconds before bumping it up. They might send out a signal so that would be an easy way to find him. Also isolation and the protection a storage garage gives one is enough not to be detected. (edited: of course he is immune)
Zosia, by not immediately saying “No reverse possible” leaves that a possibility. Carol operated that syringe like a nurse (history?) and drugging Zosia will be an issue. Add open access to drugs as verboten, along with hand grenades, though I reckon that police radio car would have a shotgun in the trunk. Yet they’re so nice.
We don’t know, yet I am getting on board with “They cannot assimilate the immune” and there is some cure and Mano-guay has some part to play in it.
Also, the music used during Manuosos’ scenes were fantastic. They also used it in one of the initial trailers, too, and I was sorta hoping it would be the show’s theme, used sporadically like they use the Severance theme in that show.
I do also like the actual opening theme, but I’m hoping they do use this one some more; it’s just perfect for the show.
She didn’t want any of them listening in. She had them all leave and asked if there were any listening devices. She assumed the meeting would be of “the resistance”.
