That doesn’t quite add up I don’t think because they experienced Helen’s consciousness even though she died during the conversion, so they probably wouldn’t assume that anyone that wasn’t part of the collective consciousness died in the conversion.
Perhaps some died immediately before the connection and they thought he was one of them?
It’s also entirely possible someone living in effective isolation could have coincidentally died shortly before the joining without anyone’s knowledge, and consequently they would have neither his memories nor information about his whereabouts or fate.
Eta, weird, the above message wasn’t in the thread when I posted. Must be a cache thing, I had the page open for a while. Anyway, great minds etc.
The fact that it took the hive a few hours to track down Manousos doesn’t bother me. It just heightens his status as an isolated paranoid misanthrope. It also indicates that the hive’s processing speed isn’t infinite.
The problem is not “tracking him down”, it’s that they should have known instantly he was missing. The hive is fully aware of everyone in it, and if he has living relatives they would know he wasn’t part of them. I had assumed he had no family or friends until they showed his mother.
There were probably millions missing - people who died before joining minds, plus a few who died immune (in planes/traffic collisions or whatever), so it’s very reasonable that one might have slipped through for a bit.
The bitch he was likely estranged from?
She would still instantly know if he was part of the collective or not.
Maybe she thought he was long dead.
It would make more sense if he was an extreme hermit type of dude that lived out in a cabin off the woods off grid and no one has seen him for years so no one knew that he was alive
Yeah this is a show about Carol Sturka and not a show about an alien hive mind taking over the earth.
Fun(?) fact: Carol’s first name is an homage to Carol Burnett and her last name is a reference to a character from a Twilight Zone episode. I think that is funny because I thought from the first episode that Carol Sturka was a great author’s name. You can see that on the cover of a book.
Helen didn’t die during the conversion. She briefly woke up along with everyone else and then died a few moments later. Presumably, anyone who died before the seizures ended did not join the collective.
Helen bonked her head on the concrete when she fell backward. She had the dark rings under her eyes consistent with that type of injury.
Yes, and? She was still shown briefly alive on the other side of the … thing … then slipped away, sure likely related to the injury, but consciousness not necessarily required for upload.
It could end up being a plot point that they just haven’t revealed yet.
I’ve seen all the episodes up to HDP. While it’s intriguing, I’m bailing.
I’m gonna put my reasons under spoiler for those who don’t want to read and might consider it threadshitting:
Summary
My main reason is that the plot holes are big enough to put through an Aircraft carrier. Some have been mentioned above but what really doomed it for me was the whole Soylent Milk thing. They are a hive mind. There is no reason to hide what you’re slurping in milk cartons, making Carol the Sleuth skulk around warehouses for the better part of an episode. The only reason to keep it hidden is to give Carol a mystery to solve, but ultimately tickle us viewers.
The second reason is that there were another season ordered at about the same time as the first premiered. I get very, very strong LOST vibes. The showrunners and everyone involved have all reasons to keep this going (jobs, income ASF) and if Carol manages to reverse it, the show is over. So stringing us along, wetting up more obstacles, leading to giant cliffhanger it the end of S1, only to be repeated in S2.
No thanks. I followed LOST all six seasons, and while parts of it was great entertainment, ultimately, that way of storytelling is something into which I don’t want to get too invested.
Had it been what is often called a “limited series,” it would have been more compelling to me.
I think it’s ultimately a show about characters, not plot, like Gilligan’s other shows. I don’t think it will be nearly as much about how the aliens work, or their ultimate goal - so no Lost-esque mysteries. And so far, IMO, the characters are fantastic.
We can let you know if it becomes Lost-ish, and if not, maybe you’ll come back.
Thanks.
I’ll check in again when they’re nearing the end of S2 to see where they’re heading.
I don’t quite understand why you say this. They didn’t try to hide it. When Diabate asked why the drank so much milk they were up front with him about it. All Carol had to do was call them up and ask. That she didn’t and went sleuthing instead isn’t a plot hole, it’s Carol being very true to her character - suspicious of the Others and desperately trying to find a way to get the OGs on her side by proving the Others are evil or whatever. It’s a feature, not a bug.
Also, they’re not “hiding” it in milk cartons. They had a lot of milk cartons (we see a big stack of unfolded ones at one point) and machinery to put the stuff into milk cartons readily available. And since only the Others would drink it and they all knew what was in it, there was no point in designing and printing new “Soylent X” cartons.
As noted, it was just that Carol didn’t ask.
