PNW dopers - I'm gonna be in Vancouver!

Well, the restaurant is up in the air right now, and I don’t know the area well enough to suggest something. Bob lives in Burnaby, and I do know there is a really good fish and chips near him. bernse suggested Mountain Shadow, but that seems to be more bar than restaurant.

Any suggestions, y’all? What kind of food do y’all like?

My .02, even though I won’t be going…

Mountain Shadow pub has some great food. An idea (something I used to do all the time) is grab a bite at one of the fabulous resturants on East Hastings (I really, really recomend Romano’s) and after dinner and a drink, head over to the Shadow which is only about a 5 minute drive.

NOTE: These are in North Burnaby, not Vancouver although very close.

Is Mountain Shadow noisy. like a lot of pubs, or a place where you can actually talk? Can we make reservations?

And on a different topic, where are all the other Greater Vancouver Dopers? Flam? zoogirl? Anybody else I’m missing?

Pub?
I don’t think I would be able to come then.

Then we will definitely go to a restaurant. What kind of food do you like Aslan2?

There are all sorts of restaurants around, and I’m sure we’re all open for suggestions. Romano’s I suppose is Italian, Penny-Farthing on Kingsway is the fish-and-chip place Zyada mentioned, there’s a somewhat seedy Thai place with great food a couple of blocks from my apartment, the Naam is vegetarian but good, and many more.

I don’t eat out much, so help me out here!

The Naam is great, but you often have to wait for a table on the weekends. (In my experience- based on a questionable sample of less than a dozen visits, all on weekends.)

Wait a minute… are we talking about some other Naam?
:checks link:

Same Naam – So… why does your profile say you’re in Burnaby? Are you ashamed of the Kits locale? Or do you list your work location? It doesn’t matter - either one is a sign of a diseased mind.

Holy Cats, someone knows who I am!

I will DEFINATELY try!

I’m just a Skytrain hop away. Anywhere in the Lower Mainland is fine by me. I’m not a drinker, but I’m ok with a bar or pub.

Just tell me where and when!

I like spicy, indian or mexican food.
I know of a indian food buffet near my house.

Larry, I am in Burnaby and haven’t been to the Naam in years. Somebody reminded me of it at work yesterday, during a discussion of how gross most veggie-burgers are. (Theirs aren’t.)

Indian food would be good, and there are lots of places to pick from.

And Hi, zoogirl!

Indian food!

Mmmmmmmm… Samosas

So many good restaurants, so little time.
Random, Brass Monkey, Thai Away Home, Raincity Grill, Cincin, Settebello’s, Naam, Banana Leaf, Montri’s…

Aslan2, why can’t you go into bars? You a juvie delinquent or something

BUMP! Is this still on or what?!

Of course it’s on! Now we are trying to come up with a restaurant to meet at.

 I got mentioned! Oh my!

Hey Bob… I just got to the boards after watching Primetime. Sheesh. :stuck_out_tongue:

The weekend of April 6… would that be Friday / Saturday / Sunday? I know the 6th is a Sunday, so it depends what time and where. Friday might be doable for me, Saturday might be if you can all put up with Awana talk for a LONG time, and Sunday is probably doable too. Of course, it depends where… especially since I don’t fancy taking the bus back to Richmond when it’s dark. Let me know what’s doing, though.

Yay, Flam! Glad you’re here!

I just picked up this week’s Georgia Straight (no relation), with a cover story on places to eat. They list four Indian places.

  1. Vij’s - Top rating, but sounds like it doesn’t take reservations.

  2. Maurya - A little expensive.

  3. Ashiana - Better prices, and a good menu.

  4. Samosa Garden - A bad choice of name, but the food is supposed to be good, even though I couldn’t find any info on the Web.

I also ran across Rubina Tandoori Restaurant, which looks good. (The menu is a .pdf, if you care.)

Does anybody have a particular favourite? Is Saturday OK with everybody?

Sorry, Flam, all I could find were places in Vancouver. If you know a place in Richmond that’s good, let us know, but I’m sure we could find you a ride home anyway.

Fair warning: if it’s Saturday, I will possibly need a ride there from Awana. Email me when you know the time of day we’ll be meeting. (and we’ll go on from there, I suppose) Of course, if this is going to be in Vancouver anyway… then it doesn’t matter if the restaurant’s in Vancouver or Richmond.

Memphis Blues is pretty good… though you may not want to know what happened at the Memphis Blues Singles Night Out a bunch of us had last month.

But a place in Richmond that’s good… well, guess it depends on your definition of “good.” Kirin / Floata / Sun Sui Wah are good, but dreadfully expensive. (and seafood may not be for everyone, anyway) I will think about it, though!

I was just assuming Saturday, but Friday would be good too. Give me some preferences, everybody, or I’ll just pick a day and time. We should decide sometime this week.

Would a newbie doper be welcome? Especially since she too wondered how someone in North Burnaby (vast scary place where mom-in-law lives) lives “a few blocks” from the Naam.

And I cant go to the Naam, because I haven’t done my Christmas shopping yet, and by the time we got a table there’d be no time left to shop…

(But they do have really really good food.)

Your WHAT shopping?!

Newbies are fine with me and so is Saturday. “Dreadfully Expensive” would leave me out, however.

I’m finished work by 2:00 on that Saturday, assuming I have to work at all. I’m traveling by transit, so I can get pretty much anywhere. Matter of fact, I have to haul out to Richmond on the 3rd for a church banquet. Semi-formal, tenth anniversary. In a dress. Jeez, do I own a dress? I’ll hafta go look!

I was just out there yesterday too for a reptile show at the Nature Park. Mr zoogirl threatened to choke me with it if I came home with a reptile, so I didn’t. I did, however, end up with a rabbit.

I don’t usually do Indian food, so if one of you will kindly point me to the mildest thing on the menu, I’d be much obliged. I do like curry, though.

Hey, I’m starting to get into this!
