Pokémon experts: Help me impress my son!

My son and I are bonding over a copy of the Blue version of Pokémon on Game Boy. He’s having trouble catching anything in the Safari Zone, and I was hoping someone could offer some advice on how to make those lousy-ass safari balls a little more effective. He is trying SO hard to catch a Dratini and every time the scaly little bastard runs away it makes his eyes well up with tears of frustration. help me so I can help him, whaddya say?

Sorry, can’t help you. The Safari Zone sucks. There’s no two ways about it. However, if you really want to impress your son, give him this little tidbit:

Just to clarify the “grassy area” he refers to is the actual zone (think there’s four or so of 'em) of the safari zone that has the stuff he wants. FTR, it’s a lot easier to get a Dratini in the game than the Tauros that’s also in the safari zone.

BTW, as a parent, shouldn’t you be condemning Pokemon as tools of evil or something?

He he he he…

Being a (predominately) middle school substitute, I am pretty much an expert on Pokemon.

The best way to catch Dratini, or any other Safari Zone Pokemon is to go “fishing”. Rock, Ball, Rock, Ball…
This supposedly works best. Sometimes you just gotta throw a bunch of Safari Balls at it. From what I hear, he is one of the harder ones…
Wanna cheat? Try this:
First go to the Safari Zone and look for Dratini. Wait for time to run out. Exit the building and fly to Cinnabar Island. Don’t battle any other pokemon along the way. On the island, go to the east side. Use surf, so you’re half on land and half on water. Go up and down that side, and only that side of the island. You should encounter him there again. And the best part is, he won’t run away.
