Poker Face (Natasha Lyonne, not Lady Gaga)

I figured it out pretty quickly, but it’s not a whodunit but an exploration of the catch of the week. I enjoyed it a lot and it was nice to see American Pie stars reunited

Really? I didn’t notice that. I might need to watch it again.

John Cho - IMDb I guess “star” was me exaggerating, but it was the first time I noticed him in something. Also, he was born in '72 and it always shocks me because I’d think he was my age or younger

That was good fun. Like a Rian Johnson take on Leverage.

Fully caught up now. We’ve enjoyed season 2, the main goal for us while watching is to guess the plot points ahead of their reveal. For the last episode, I’m glad I picked up on the Sting within the Sting, and figured out the married couple as well. We really liked this episode and the school one; the baseball one was not a highpoint.

I’m also having trouble suspending my disbelief at times; too many improbables. There are 4 more episodes to season 2 so I’m suspecting a big reveal related to Good Buddy. Either the Mob or the FBI is my guess.

IIRC this (2x11) is the first two-parter? And the first explicit reference to Columbo?

I’ve finished Season 1.

I find it annoying when she blurts out liar.

Tv detectives (like Columbo) often know when the suspect is lying. They don’t say anything. Instead they focus their attention on the lying suspect. Prove they are guilty.

I liked the first season a lot though I didn’t like the introduction of Beatrix Hasp to set up the same dynamic in the second season. I didn’t think it would work, and the showrunners seemed to agree, since they resolved it pretty quickly.

But the problem was that most of the murders were just accidents. That lowered the stakes: the killer wasn’t a threat. They began to go back to real murders and the show improved.

This is one of the things that also annoys me. It’s like part of her ability to detect when someone is lying is also a compulsion to say “Bullshit”.

You see, she has this thing…

Not always. Beatrice Hasp’s husband, for example.

In the last episode she didn’t blurt it out when the FBI guy lied to her about keeping her friend safe.

She does do it pretty knee-jerk, but if she’s thinking about it, she can refrain.

In the one episode set at a private school, she had to edit her “bullshit” to something else.

I had forgotten about the school episode, but that makes sense.

I haven’t watched last week’s episode yet, since it’s apparently a two-parter and I’d rather watch both of them at once.

I hope that someone in the last episode says, “I see dead people”, considering who the guest star is. But that might be too meta.

I think so. I suspected some reference to Peter Falk when they showed the fake eye.

Not a huge fan of the Iguana character. While it’s a bit silly to complain about suspension of disbelief when the lead character is a human lie detector, Alex/Iguana is just a bit too far. How was she able to kill so many FBI agents and Hasp in literally 1 minute from the time the horn sounded to when Charlie entered the house? It’s pretty much superhero territory. It was a good swerve having Alex be the Iguana instead of Justin Theroux.

But I liked the Thelma and Louise homage (The Grand Canyon Canyon!) and Luca’s work with the FBI. This show is a regular Chekhov’s Gun showcase. When Alex gave Charlie the Big Red gum you could tell from the way the camera lingered on it that it was a plot point. This happens in every episode, you just have to figure out how the object will be used to further the plot.

I didn’t remember the cinnamon thing, though. It looked like clumsy product placement.

I had suspected Alex from the star, so I was actively waiting for cinnamon to show up.
