Poldark Poll

Just watched the 7th episode of the second series last night. I’m liking it, but not as much as I liked the first series, and not as much as I liked the books. I also think the first series captured the books better-- which could have had something to do with the fact that Winston Graham was still alive when the first series was made.

Anyway, I’m wondering what other people think.

I didn’t see an option for “loved the first series, haven’t seen the new one yet”. I remember watching it with my mother when I was but a wee Wook and thus started my life long love of British men. Robin Ellis = rrooooooowr! (insert drooly smiley)

I was a teenager when the original was shown on TV and I just loved it.

It took me a while to settle into the new series. I didn’t think the actors playing the characters were anywhere near a match for the originals but gradually I started to warm to them.

Still I was in two minds about even watching the second of the new series but decided that I’d come this far so might as well carry on. I am so glad I did because I really fell in love with the show this time round.

I didn’t watch the first series–although I was old enough. I’m enjoying the new one fairly well.

So I can’t compare. But I just popped in to say how happy I was to see Demelza knock Ross down last night. He’s handsome–but what an idiot!

Dude, did you just forego an opportunity to have a Poldark Dark Poll? Jeeeeez.

I watched season 1, but it was too slooooow, so i just stopped. Not bad mind you, it just didnt make it into my limited TV watchlist. The Durrells in Corfu took it’s place. Loved those books, just liked Poldark book.

I never saw the first series, but I’m watching this one.

I almost gave up on it last episode. It was getting too depressing, what with struggling with debt and death and nasty inexplicably hostile bankers. But I think I’ll carry on. There’s always the chance that Aidan Turner will strip down again.

On an objective scale, Aiden Turner is hotter than Robin Ellis (back in his day), but I’d still take Ellis over Turner. I’m sick of Turner’s “brooding.” It’s like he took Hayden Christensen lessons.

Also, I have not been able to warm to the current Demelza. She has no sense of humor. Demelza in the books is sort of happy-go-lucky, and Angharad Rees played her with a sense of humor. You really need one to be married to Ross. Ralph Bates was way more hatable as George. Elizabeth was played by Jill Townsend, a true beauty, Caroline by Judy Geeson (To Sir, with Love; Mad about You), and was very pretty, but also a very, very good actress. About the only character who is better this time round is Verity. I do like this Verity.2 a lot.

LOVED the first series. I am liking this second, it has its moments (though a little much of shots of green fields and expansive sea and sky)… This season’s Demelza annoys me a bit because her hair is always flapping around in the wind (historically inaccurate, women secured their hair and always wore something on their heads). She’s not as pretty as the first series’ Demelza but I like her acting… George Warleggan reminds me of Roger Daltrey of The Who so much that it’s distracting… Elizabeth this series, I like well enough, and her old tarot card reading granny. Her decision to marry George is brave and logical… I have read most of the books, they are extraordinarily engrossing. Enjoying Poldark very much!

Yes, this show could depress a hyena.

I like the part where Aidan Turner and his hair brood by the sea.

My category is OTHER:

Love the books. Love the first series, except the Jack Pulman episodes where he changed things drastically. Haven’t been able to watch the remake yet, but I doubt the new cast has anything over the original.

I voted for the original series. Very distinctive character actors and not resting on pretty. In addition to the above crits, the actors playing Doctor Enys and Caroline are lacking. Part of the problem is that the timing is off in the script so she’s always announcing that she is leaving for London and then two minutes later she’s in a scene so it’s feels like no time has passed. This is a production fault but it makes her look all flighty.

I read several of the books but lost interest after a while, did they evolve to the next generation? I forget.

Well, the last episode livened things up a bit. It wasn’t any cheerier, but at least Demelza socked Ross a good one. You go, girl!

Ha, I’m glad I’m not the only one! I keep thinking of him as Evil Roger Daltrey.
