Politely disagree with a modding...

I don’t know how to link to a specific post in another thread… In the thread about evidence for God (ha! as if there were only one!) Marley23 modded raindog for having “junior modded” Critical1, for having told him that spelling and punctuation and grammar are important and that others would take him more seriously if he used these properly.

In my humble opinion, telling others, “Your spelling is rotten, your formatting is hard to read, your grammar is awful, and people aren’t going to take you seriously unless you get better” is not “junior modding” but legitimate criticism.

So… Um… Meh. My opinion. I also like white chocolate.

I was with you up until that last line. You heathen you.

To link to a specific post click on the underlined number to the left of the little red triangle that you use to report posts. A window pops up with just that specific post and then copy and paste the URL.

To link to your OP I clicked on the number 1 and here it is.

Trinopus: People will take you more seriously if you at least link to the thread.

The actual post was more obnoxious than Trinopus’s description. Link here.

Here’s why I modded the post: telling someone their spelling isn’t very good once is a legitimate criticism. Repeating yourself - with a link to your own post, no less - and saying they “post like a pre-teen” and are being disrespectful is condescending and it’s junior modding.

Seems like a good mod call to me.

Ah ha. I understood “junior modding” to be fairly nebulous, but primarily attached to enforcing/reminding another poster of the Board’s rules. Though it’s come up for discussion before, there is no general punctuation/spelling/usage rule here, so a warning for being disrespectful and condescending makes sense–but it’s jarring to see it called “junior modding.”

It’s a fuzzy line, but it’s easy to see how it includes any flavour of telling another poster how to act (not just suggesting).

There is no such thing as white chocolate.

That’s usually how the term is used. I could’ve also just said the post was rude or insulting, but I didn’t think it was worth splitting hairs over. Critical1 isn’t new to this board and didn’t need raindog to tell him how things are done around here. In fact Critical1 has been here several years longer than raindog has.

Actually, it is a source of frustration for me that every mod admonition requires an ATMB thread pouting about the mod’s modding, and invariably runs 4 pages and I just want to scream Grow up! (and I’m not saying for a moment that’s what the OP is)

With that in mind, I would not have started a thread on Marley23’s admonition, whether I agreed or not. It was a rather benign admonition, and it was not an severe overreaction, imv.

But since Trinopus started the thread, (and I appreciate it, Trinopus) and I’m cited in the post, I’ll weigh in with my 200 pesos. (and I have no intention to turn this into a 4 page pout)

I agree with Trinopus. We are a community here, and there are some conventions we’ve come to expect. And the community has, on more occasions than I can recall, chastised a poster for the garden variety incoherence that critical1 displayed in the OP.

It seems downright silly that we need a mod to say [essentially], “hey, clean up your posts if you want us to take you seriously.”

In fact, the 2 posts that immediately proceeded from the OP, called critical1 out for the punctuation and formatting. critical1 may be a long time member, but his name is entirely unfamiliar to me. And I’m not the only one that had an issue with the lack of proper formatting.

And I would ask that Marley23 restrain the urge to point out how the nature of my post vis a vis posts 2 and 3 of that thread make my posts “junior modding” although we’re all saying the same things. Because, in the end, I don’t really mind or care.

I disagree with Marley23. It’s no big deal to me.

ETA

I would add that I think Marley23 and tomndebb are good GD moderators and imo are right way more than they’re wrong.

I just happen to think this time Marley23 was wrong.

This is the real issue here. I don’t know why the mods are ignoring it.

We don’t usually moderate posts like this because it is indeed annoying if someone can’t be bothered to use halfway decent spelling or formatting. But saying it over and over doesn’t help matters. It’s rude and it’s a distraction from the thread topic, and if the poster didn’t listen the first time, repeating yourself probably won’t accomplish anything. If you had only told him once, I wouldn’t have modded your post. The same goes for your comments about “posting like a pre-teen” and the suggestion that he was being disrespectful to other posters. You took it a little too far in this instance.

Ok.

I’m good with that.

They’ve circled the wagons into a white-chocolate covered pretzel.

Ah, well, no big deal… I got something out of it: Drunky Smurf taught me how to link to specific posts! Thank you!

And the White Chocolate Insurgency will live on to fight another day! (Once we get over our internal split over peppermint flakes. Ah, strife!)

We do try to stay away from the really divisive issues, as we don’t want to incite massive board wars that will tear apart the very infrastructure of the Straight Dope. In this case, though, Simple Linctus is correct and we’ll be burning Trinopus at the stake in the morning. Please, no recording devices allowed.

For better effect, there’s an additional step you may want to try.

(a) As Drunky Smurf says, click on the underlined number at the upper right corner of the post. You get a new window showing that post only. Example (using a quasi-randomly chosen post from some other thread:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=15930252&postcount=4

(b) Note that window shows the thread title, underlined, at the top right of the post. Here’s the extra step: Now click on that. You should now get an entire page of that thread, initially positioned in your browser window to that same post. Now, you can scroll up and down to see surrounding posts. This is therefore a better link to copy into your own post. Example:
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=15930252#post15930252
This is what Marley23 did in Post #5 above (and what I did right here).

Drat; my aunt would have loved to have had a few still photos for the family album!

Very cool, and thank you! I would make use of this knowledge, but, alas, I seem to be slated for incineration…

So, what I should have done was…
