Poll and discussion for Democratic/liberal/progressive voters: your early preference for 2020

Thanks. Who’s your “other”?

Well, it’s kind of a silly thing. But I voted for Brown. Largely because I’ve met him and he comes across sincerely. He’s a solid union lefty, too. Think Bernie without about 20 years. And he’s won in a much larger state than Bernie has ever seriously run in.

But I do agree that none of this in indicative. We’ll find out over the next six months who’s thinking of running and how seriously they’re being taken by the media and fundraising groups.

Cory Booker was like having a superhero for a mayor but I don’t know much else about him.

No preference. Booker is the one name on the list I really don’t want if it’s against Trump, regardless of the odds. We and the country need one side to be trusted to act like the adults.

Because he generated a shitton of national excitement and money, two things you can’t win the presidency without. And it wasn’t just with young people, but yes, he did capture youth interest. That’s important.

Amy Klobuchar seems like another bland, “safe” market-tested candidate cut from the same mold as Hillary. She may surprise me, but I just don’t think Minnesota Nice will play well across the country in defeating Trump. I hate to say it, but she doesn’t strike me as “marketable,” and to win the presidency these days, you need that along with a strong message. O’Rourke/Klobuchar is much more winnable.

People (campaign ops and donors) are already waiting to see what Beto does before they make any commitments to other candidates. That boy’s got something.

Sometimes lightning in a bottle is more powerful than a perfectly calculated and market-tested approach. Just ask our two most recent presidents.

Jmho, and that may change in a month.

I’m not a democratic, liberal, or progressive voter so poll not for me. I voted for other to test the poll based on report it was closed.

Showtime doesn’t introduce him until season 3.

Depends what you mean by “likely”, but if the candidate is a strong antiwar voice I wil 100% vote for him or her. The bar is rather low. If not, I will vote third party. Not that it matters, especially in my state. There is one person on your list I would very very likely vote for, although I would cringe while doing so. There are plenty of Democrats/demsocs/liberals I would vote for, but idk if the party will go that way, and they aren’t on the list. I am not familiar with a lot of these folks, but if they were strong antiwar voices, I would be.

It doesn’t have to be a true antiwar stance even. If the candidate lays out anything like Daniel Bessner’s leftist foreign policy as described in the NYT, I will be on board. Like I said, a low bar. My fear is the candidate will not lay out a foreign policy and we are just supposed to assume that because the candidate wants to redistribute wealth and provide government healthcare to all that the candidate will not start wars, finance extremists, and drone innocent civilians.

IMO, Klobuchar seems almost the exact opposite of Hillary, at least in many important ways – no big national profile, no decades-long hate-campaign against her, almost universally well liked by both sides, and no national political “machine”.

Well, your thread is titled, “Poll and discussion for Democratic/liberal/progressive voters: your early preference for 2020.” In your OP, you add, “The poll is meant only for those who believe they are likely to support the Democratic candidate for President in 2020; discussion is for anyone who’d like to take part.”

I happen to be a Democratic/liberal/progressive voter, I am 100% certain to support the 2020 Dem nominee, whoever s/he may be, and my early preference is for knocking a few names off the list, because I have some specific preferences there already. I’m more than willing to take part in this discussion.

Maybe in your OP, you should have more clearly defined the parameters of the discussion you intended, but ISTM that my participation is well within those you actually stated.

Plus, no one really gets to tell anyone they can’t participate in a thread except a moderator.

what are you referring to? Booker seems as much of an adult as the rest of the crew.

I’m not saying it’s an exact comparison, but she strikes me as another bland candidate that marks off the things that sound good for a candidate (Moderate, woman, Midwestern, senator, nice). Plus I’ve heard her speak, and maybe I’m missing something, but she came across less impressive than Hillary Clinton, and Hillary’s a low bar.

Sometimes the unconventional can excite people in ways the conventional “safe” candidate can’t.

People want to be wowed, inspired and excited by a presidential candidate these days. “Minnesota Nice” sounds too safe too run in Pennsylvania, Florida, Nevada, Ohio, Wisconsin, even Michigan. Inspirational wins, and when you’re running against an incumbent, you really need to bring the inspiration, especially when that incumbent brings a fair amount of inspiration himself. Again jmho.

Sorry, miscommunication. I took you to be shitting on the thread, and I got defensive. Apologies.

for now none of the above

Do you have a preference that’s not on the list?

You might be right – I’ll reserve any final (or close to final) judgment for the actual campaign. If Klobuchar turns out to be incredibly boring, then I’ll switch to someone else.

I admit I was curious about this as well.

I wouldn’t even dare stepping on your toes like that!

Just voted Klobuchar. But would willingly vote for anyone on the list - or a potted plant - over Trump.
