Poll II

Betenoir: just to be clear, are you selecting Jefferson and skipping the bonus?

I thought I was pretty clear. I’m embracing Jefferson and taking the 500,000 dollars. Which I will use to move back to mother England. Not Sure how TJ would feel about that but I’ll pack a copy of the Bill of Rights in my carry on.

1. Canon in D or Minuet in G

I’m not familiar enough with either of these pieces to make a call.

2. Free Bird or Stairway to Heaven

Stairway to Heaven. Free Bird is too repetitive at the end and I like the “mood” of Stairway to Heaven better.

3. Marilyn Monroe or Helen of Troy

No opinion.

4. Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking, probably just because his research and knowledge is more up to date.

5. 1964 or 1968

1968, the year 2001 was released.

6. Tokyo or Bejing

Tokyo. I am thinking there is probably more to see and do there.

7. Cairo or Addis Ababa

Cairo, same reason as above.

8. Mensa or Masons

Mensa.

9. Standard time or daylight savings time

Standard time. Quite frankly I don’t need an extra hour of daylight in the evening in the summer.

10. Pipes or cigars

As a nonsmoker, if I had to choose one, a pipe; they smell better when smoked.

11. Rum or Bourbon

Non-drinker, nothing here.

12. Southern fried chicken or Yankee pot roast

The chicken sounds really good right now.

13. Gone with the Wind or Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz, since I am more familiar with it.

14. “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” (Kennedy) or “No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him.”
(Jefferson)

Kennedy’s quote.

15. Discover a new comet or win the lottery

Lottery.

Bonus question: $500,000 now or $5,000,000 ten years from now.

I’d rather take the $500,000 right now. Who knows what might happen between now and 2017. $500K would settle my debts and still leave plenty more for the things I really want.

  1. Canon in D or Minuet in G

  2. Free Bird or Stairway to Heaven

3.** Marilyn Monroe** or Helen of Troy

  1. Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking

  2. 1964 or 1968 (RFK and MLK killed, Tet Offensive, Chicago Democratic Convention - 1968 sucked!)

  3. Tokyo or Bejing

7.** Cairo** or Addis Ababa

  1. Mensa or Masons

  2. Standard time or daylight savings time

  3. Pipes or cigars

  4. Rum or Bourbon

  5. Southern fried chicken or Yankee pot roast

  8. Discover a new comet or win the lottery

Bonus question: $500,000 now or $5,000,000 ten years from now.

  1. Canon in D or Minuet in G - the saddest of all keys

  2. Free Bird or Stairway to Heaven - marginal - dislike both

  4. Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking - much more significant

  5. 1964 or 1968 - born that year

  6. Tokyo or Bejing - no preference

  7. Cairo or Addis Ababa - no preference

  8. Mensa or Masons - I know a Mason or two and they’re much nicer than the couple of Mensans I know.

  9. Standard time or daylight savings time - no preference

  10. Pipes or cigars - pipes get all gooey inside

  11. Rum or Bourbon - rum is nasty

  12. Southern fried chicken or Yankee pot roast - no idea

  13. Gone with the Wind or Wizard of Oz - better songs

  14. “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” (Kennedy) or “No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him.” (Jefferson) - Jefferson had the right idea here, but I’m not keen to follow through to it’s ultimate conclusion

  15. Discover a new comet or win the lottery - the discovery of a new comet is cool and all, but…

Bonus question: $500,000 now or $5,000,000 ten years from now.

Don’t be a jerk.

  1. Canon in D or Minuet in G
I’m not into artillery. Min was a hot babe, and when I et her, she woke up the neighbors.

*Pipes smell good.*Cigars, even very good ones, smell vile.

  11. Rum or Bourbon
Rum is mere booze; Bourbon is fine art.

  12. Southern fried chicken or Yankee pot roast

  13. Gone with the Wind or Wizard of Oz

  14. **“Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” ** (Kennedy) or “No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him.” (Jefferson)
I got my username from JFK.

  15. Discover a new comet or win the lottery
I’m not into obscure fame. How many of us can picture the discoverers of the Hawley-Smoot Comet?

Bonus question: $500,000 now or $5,000,000 ten years from now.
I can borrow on the promised $5M.

Hmm… this sure looks a lot like some of eHarmony’s profile questions…

Kennedy’s quote. Its message can be applied to any institution and espouses service and generosity. As far as I know, it was not spoken by a hypocrite. Whereas we know Jefferson’s was…which makes all his talk about “natural rights” meaningless. I can see the greatness in both quotes and both men, but Kennedy’s quote is purer and speaks more to what I think society should be about.

  1. Discover a new comet or win the lottery

Win the lottery. With my winnings, I can buy a comet.

Bonus question: $500,000 now or $5,000,000 ten years from now.

This is tricky. I can certainly wait ten years for five mil, but I’ve got bills that need paying now. Also, I could turn $500K into much more than five mil with smart investments. I might die in ten years and never enjoy the money. Inflation may make five million a paltry sum ten years from now.

I say gimme the money now, buster.

  3. Marilyn Monroe or Helen of Troy…Helen of Troy, Monroe is not really my type and Helen may or may not be.

  4. Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking…Uncle Alby. The dude was so cool. No really, I greatly respect both, but Einstein has always been one of my heroes from a young age. This is not necessarily a rational choice for me.

  5. 1964 or 1968…**1964 ** was before I was born, but it was when the Beatles arrived.

  6. Tokyo or Bejing…Tokyo.

  10. Pipes or cigars…Neither

Just ask his slaves.

Bonus question: $500,000 now or 5,000,000 ten years from now....5,000,000 in ten year, should = early retirement. I do not believe I could turn $500,000 into $5,000,000 in only ten years.

Jim

This is the second in a three-part series. You may participate even if you did not participate in the first one. Please choose one item from each pair. You do not have to select from every pair. “Both” or “Neither” answers, or answers that are vague or conditional, will count as no selection.

You can make a choice for any reason. It doesn’t have to be meaningful to anyone else. In the first poll, someone chose Charlotte over Atlanta just because they liked the sound of the word better. And that’s fine.

So thanks for participating! And again, I invite you to explain your responses as much as you like.
