Poll: Political Affiliation and SUV ownership

Democrat-leaning Independent
Nope - we’ve got a couple of Subarus
We live in a mid-size city, but not in the urban center of it.

Heavily Libertarian leaning pseudo-Democrat
Yup - love my Hyundai Santa Fe

Live in the 'burbs

  1. Republican
  2. I like SUVs but do not currently own one
  3. medium-size city within the DC metro area; kindof a suburb I guess

New Democrat
Don’t own or lease a car of any kind and don’t have a driver’s licence; would never have an SUV (besides the obvious, where the hell am I supposed to park it in this city, anyway?)
City dweller

Democrat, '05 Toyota Camry

  1. Registered as a Democrat, but I usually vote Rebublican. I consider myself moderately conservative. Depends on the issue.
  2. Yes, a Chevy Trailblazer (a mid-size SUV)
  3. Suburban, but I travel to rural areas a lot.

Are you kidding me? I have good reasons for needing something that’s 4WD. Although we don’t get a lot of snow here in the Mid-Atlantic, we do get some. I have to go to work, even in bad weather, and it’s in a somewhat rural area. My office never closes, literally. (Really - it’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week)
I have to be able to get out during bad weather, whether it’s for work or getting to the firehouse. It’s not like I’m out doing donuts in parking lots when it snows.

Plus, I have kids. Sometimes I have to haul stuff around.
I used to have a station wagon, but the Trailblazer is so much better.

How am I willfully endangering and inconveniencing you?

a) Democrat
b) Yep. Although if it wasn’t for work, I’d drive a smaller car. The day may come where my Jeep is strictly a work car.
c) Subarban

a) Libertarian, I guess
b) I’ve got seven cars, so it’s inevitable that one of them would be an SUV. '05 Infiniti FX35
c) Inner-ring suburbs

Liberal
Yes, I own an SUV
City dweller with an extremely short commute

Amen!

My SUV came in plenty handy a week ago when we had to evacuate due to the fires. I had 2 suitcases, 6 computers, 4 guns, 2 cats (in carriers), several boxes of wifey’s clothes, wifey, important papers, and me all in the one car. And still had room for more, just no time to get it.

Note:

  1. ‘dems’ refers to people who are left-leaning/liberals, ‘reps’ refers to people who are right-leaning/conservatives
  2. We need more conservatives to answer this poll, to get a meaningful sample size.

a) Libertarian.
b) Yes, an '85 Chevy Suburban, for plowing snow at my home.
c) Small town (2000 people).

Yeah, but because of the popularity of little cars, often you have to drive on the road to get to the offroading.

a) Democrat
b) '97 Grand Cherokee
c) Outskirts of a small town

Any more conservatives out there? It’d be great to get a larger sample size.

My voting leans democratic.

I own a Subaru Legacy wagon, so it’s AWD but without the big everything. I just need the AWD.

NY City dweller but I drive a stupid amount now that I’m working in NJ.

Democrat
No, but I do have a full size pick-up (for work, mostly)
Far suburbs/rural

For those who suggest a Station Wagon - we just went through buying one to replace our totalled Ford Escort wagon. Do you realize that a station wagon that will fit two dog crates and camping gear usually only gets 22-24 mpg? (we ended up with a 5 year old Saturn)

I’m waiting for Subaru to come out with a hybrid Outback…

Simple:
a) Republican
b) No. I own a small sedan. I hate SUVs & pickups with a passion, and I’m not fond of their drivers either - they’re often inconsiderate jerks.
c) Can’t get much more rural than where I live.

If you want a few more conservative data points my dad and brother are republicans and drive a sedan and a coupe respectively. Mom’s a republican with a jeep wrangler.

  1. Bleeding Heart Capitalist

  2. Ford Escape

  3. 30/70 Very rural/city (SW Montana & Vegas)

  1. Leftie (leaning socialist)
  2. 07 Subaru Outback
  3. Urban

I probably most identify with Democrats, but only because the Republicans seem to suck so much right now.

I’ve got a 2006 Honda Element.

Yep, I live in Redmond, WA.
