Senior Web Developer. Mostly, I write and maintain database-y sort of software, that has a large and complicated Web front end. Have written an inordinate number of posts while waiting for database files to download across the network.
Retired and Lov’in it!!
But in my former life I was a senior marketing analyst. I worked for the same firm for 25 years, retired at 60 am healthy happy and all the other good stuff that comes in the latter half of life
Interesting to see what others do here. Lot’s of computer people. Great thread!
Environmental Program Planner and Policy Analyst for a natural resource agency.
Retail, but I own the store.
Geologist working on an oil rig for 15 years.
They let me go home sometimes.
And… fresh today, hot off the presses! Here are some examples of Mysteries of the Earth that I’ve tackled recently. I don’t just “profess”, you know:

Notes: (1) those are PDFs, and (2) only the abstracts.
(Usually when people ask me what I am I tell them “Volcanologist”, which sounds a lot sexier than “Trace-Element Geochemist and Igneous Petrologist”.)
During the day I am a full time student majoring in Sociology.
In the evening I work full time as a CSR for a major hotel franchiser with 9 brands (mostly budget/family hotels and business class). IOW I listen to people bitch all night…
Retail Buyer for a museum store.
I kinda fell into the job, but I absolutely love it! I realized part way through my masters that I am not smart enough to be a successful archeologist, so I’ve focused on a different aspect of the museum/education world. I get to use my degree to research appropriate tie-in merchandise, I get paid to shop, and I have a ton of autonomy and daily challenges. Now if only those non-profit salaries were a little higher!
Achernar, where’s that then? (I’m not from the US!). What are you specialising in? I’m an extra-galactic astronomer, doing X-ray and radio stuff in clusters.
Telecommunications guru for the Big Bad Phone Company™. I sit here all day long watching all of your datagrams zipping around the northeast part of the country (VA to ME), and spring into action (yeah, right) when something breaks.
I manage all of our Lucent 500 series & 9000 series switches, and Alcatel (formerly Newbridge Networks) 7470 & 3600 series.
Children’s book editor by day
Fledgling author by night.
Very ironic. I spend my days disappointing aspiring authors and my nights being disappointed by editors (sometimes).
I teach Kindergarten at a snooty private school.
Yeah, I’m raking in the Big Bucks.
I’m also a volunteer Firefighter with First Responder training, but I don’t get paid for that so it’s not technically a career.
Silicon-Valley refugee who was forced to move back to the DC area and…
I know write software for the U.S. Senate. It bores me to tears. Anyone in Sili Valley need an experienced programmer with all kinds of experience? I’ll work for food. Really. please.
I’m community manager for a mainstream parenting website. I oversee our version of admins and mods, decide what is delete-able, who is doing something naughty enough to be banned, what new boards and features we need, and answer tons and tons of emails, among other stuff.
So yes I spend all day thinking about online community, and then play in one for leisure. Honestly though I feel that it is important to my role as CM to participate in another community as a regular member so I don’t loose touch with what it’s like to be on the other side.

Travel Consultant. For now.
Customer service supervisor for an airline. Job is not the greatest, but the perks RULE!
I’m a Data Specialist in the IT department of a BIG company. I like it so far.
Network Engineer at a university. Which is a step up from being a network engineer for a county.
I actually got hired just this afternoon at this consulting company…I’m still not exactly sure what they do (they make video resumes but I don’t see how that’s consulting) and I’m not exactly sure what my job there is, but my first assignment is to fix their website and take the silly animation off that the last guy who had my job put on there. Well, at least they’re paying me.
I retired a few years ago but my wife wouldn’t let me stay around the house so I talked a friend of mine into letting me hang out at his business. It’s a great deal. I don’t have a set schedule and can pretty much work as much or as little as I feel like. Since I was an accountant in my former life I help him out with administrative stuff.
