Poll: the opposite of desire?

I’ve just finished reading “A Streetcar Named Desire” for the umpteenth time and I must confess I’m in rather a punchy mood, so here’s a question for you:

What is the opposite of desire? Is it, as Blanche says, death? A quick Googling gives us fear, anxiety, abjection, sleep, aversion, love, compassion, indifference as options. What say you, and why?

"What is the opposite of desire?"

Some form of aversion, IMHO. Ever loved someone and really desired them, then broke up and not want anything further to do with them? The very idea of being intimate with that person again makes you feel like throwing up?

I have, and that feeling of revulsion is the opposite of desire, at least for me.

Despair

Antipathy.

Indifference.

See “marriage”

Aversion, I guess. But isn’t not wanting something basically the same as wanting something? You could say desire doesn’t need an opposite because it can go either way.

Another vote for indifference. Hatred/antipathy/aversion etc all contain a little bit of desire.

I’d go with whimsy.

I’d say erised.

Satisfaction is the death of desire?

I would suggest apathy.

Or satiety, depending on how you look at it.

Revulsion. It’s the exact mirror image of desire.

Disgust.
Desire, I want it. Disgust, get it away from me!

Another vote for apathy.

I vote for revulsion.

Yeah. “Revulsion” was the first word that occurred to me when I saw the thread title. What I want to know is, what’s the opposite of “streetcar?”

My first thought was “loathing”, but revulsion is good.

Indifference or revulsion, depending on what you mean by “opposite”.

Yet another vote for apathy.
