I’ve just finished reading “A Streetcar Named Desire” for the umpteenth time and I must confess I’m in rather a punchy mood, so here’s a question for you:
What is the opposite of desire? Is it, as Blanche says, death? A quick Googling gives us fear, anxiety, abjection, sleep, aversion, love, compassion, indifference as options. What say you, and why?
Some form of aversion, IMHO. Ever loved someone and really desired them, then broke up and not want anything further to do with them? The very idea of being intimate with that person again makes you feel like throwing up?
I have, and that feeling of revulsion is the opposite of desire, at least for me.
Aversion, I guess. But isn’t not wanting something basically the same as wanting something? You could say desire doesn’t need an opposite because it can go either way.
