While I appreciate all the work being done on the SDMB I have to admit that I now find the thread hint to be more of a nuicance than a help. It was a good idea at the time but IMO most dopers are relatively well behaved and we won’t need the hint to explain a meaningless title to us. So here is a poll. Do you find it a help or a hinderance?
Hindrance. It seems to stay up way too long and I always seem to be hovering over a thread that I don’t intend to read.
It’s a help to me. Not so much for the “what the heck does this title mean”, but more for “did I read this one already, yup, I recognize the opening sentence” or “do I want to read this now, no, I’ll save it for later”.
I hate opening a thread, waiting for the page to load (and my computer and service is very slow), and finding out I’m not interested at all, or worse, it’s deja vu all over again. Kinda like opening the refrigerator door and there is no new food in there since the last time you opened it ten minutes ago.
Lots of changes on the boards since I got my internet service back, and I do have to say that (so far), I like this one.
I feel like this when opening a different forum. Good analogy.
Annoying. I never use it, so when it pops up it’s a distraction, and it occasionally covers up thread titles.
I love it.
It is good.
I like it when it’s useful. I find it annoying when it’s not.
I use it…
Actually I didn’t know what it was called, I really didn’t think about it (if anything I was thinking of it as something with the word “preview”)…
So I used the thing to figure out what this thread was about.
I wish I could figure out how to make it work for me again.
I love it and now find myself hovering over threads on other message board before grinding my teeth in anguish that they don’t have this feature. I really like knowing whether I’m likely to be even slightly interested in a topic before clicking on an ambiguously named thread.
Those that like it: Does it bug you how short the delay before it disappears is?
I really like it. Sometimes a thread title can be misleading, and the hint clarifys the real topic. Some topics simply cannot be condensed into a single thread title. The hint helps with that, too. Having said that, I realize it annoys some people, and I wonder if there’s a way the admins could give us the option of seeing the hints or not?
I like it. The short delay doesn’t bother me, but I’m also a pretty fast reader.
screech-owl said exactly what I would have said, if, you know, it hadn’t already been said.
I like it, because it allows me to avoid the sneaky TMI threads that are titled something like “today I had chicken.”
However, it only seems to work on certain threads–I’ve noticed if the thread is more than 3 pages long, I get no preveiw.
::lament::
Sometimes, it doesn’t work at all. I spent a bit of time trying to find a pattern to it, but failed. I thought at first that if an OP began with a link, it wouldn’t work. But that proved to be false.
I like it a lot. The short delay does bother me a bit, but I’m a bit of a slow reader. I haven’t managed to figure out the pattern yet for when it doesn’t work either. I usually don’t open thread if I don’t get the thread hint (especially during high traffic times).
Here’s a tip incase you don’t know. If you slowly move your mouse along the thread title the hint will stay indefinately.
I love it, love it, love it.
This board runs so slow that I despise waiting for a page to load only to find out that it’s a topic that I’m really not interested in.
For those of us that are slow readers, you simply need to move your cursor over the title a little bit and the text will stay up indefinitely.
I’ll agree, it is a little annoying when it covers up other thread titles but a simple “swoosh” of the mouse to the right makes it all better.
I, too, hover now at other boards expecting the preview pop-up. Duh.
