I never drink low alcohol, decaffeinated, or diet anything, as those are the work of the devil. Oh yes, and they suck. If I don’t feel like drinking real 5%alc/vol beer, I’ll have lemonade. If I don’t want to get fat on lemonade’s sugar, I’ll have water.
I’ve developed a taste for soda water lately. Then I notice it contains salt (whoodathunkit? I thought it was just water and CO2). Maybe that’s why it’s tasty.
My father, a very light drinker, when he goes out with his heavy drinking friends where he feels under pressure to be ‘one of the boys’ (and, clearly, British drinking culture is pretty anti-non drinkers), he’ll order a gin and tonic when it’s someone else’s round, and when it’s his turn to buy the drinks, he’ll just get himself a tonic water - looks and smells the same. He tends to buy A LOT of the rounds when he’s out.
Me, I can’t see the problem of just buying a coke, frankly. But then I’m not ‘one of the boys’.
Seltzer water on ice, with lemon. So fizzy, so good! And I can tell everyone it’s a gin & tonic, so I don’t have the stigma of “designated driver=wuss.”
Same here, for much the same reason. Ok, I’m not “one of the boys”, but most of my friends are pretty hardened drinkers, and it saves me from the whole “Why aren’t you drinking? Are you ill? Oh my God, you’re pregnant, aren’t you?!” rigmarole.
Smooth, pleasant and since it’s on the rocks (80 proof) just strong enough to sip. While other people are gulping down beer or mixed drinks, you can sip on something straight and nobody gives you any crap.
I drink it when i have a cold and have to work (I bartend so I can’t be coughing on peoples’ drinks) and it coats my throat. If I’m hungover and need “hair of the dog” but can’t stomach what I usually drink, Grand Marnier saves the day.
Just as long as it isn’t milk. Ordering milk in a bar will get you KILLED, dude.
Maybe it’s the different culture, but I haven’t ordered anything alcoholic in a bar in around 10 years now, and I don’t think anyone has commented on it once. I’ve had some crappy experiences not drinking in pubs - one pub charged me twice, once for the soda and once for the side of lime juice, and one other bar tried to charge me for a glass of tap water, but other than that, being a non-drinker who goes out for wing night in pubs regularly has been a complete non-issue.
Diet Coke. Anyone who has a problem with that likely isn’t someone I’d go drinking with in the first place. If for some reason I felt the need to cover it, I’d ask for a virgin daiquiri or something. Because. . .yay. . .yummy frozen fruit!
Like Queen Bruin, I go the Sprite with grenadine route but call it a Shirley Temple because I have no shame. Right around the last time my best friend got pregnant, we’d had a weight-loss competition going on between us, so I only allowed myself a couple of beers a week. After she found out she was pregnant, she would order Shirley Temples at the bar and I found it a good alternative to having one beer then nothing to drink for the rest of the night.
I’ll still usually get a beer, just get something I know I will drink very slowly because I don’t like it too much. Last night I was sober driver and sipped on a Boulevard Wheat for 2 hours. That beer is pretty good but it’s not something I’ll choose when I am drinking to drink and get a bit of a buzz on.
I just get iced water. Until one of my drinking friends takes pity on me and buys me a diet coke. After a few more drinks another friend will buy me a lemon, lime & bitters. Then I might get a hot chocolate.
The drunker they get, the fancier my drinks become!
