I’m a Pale Male (but hairy, so it doesn’t show as much.)
a) No. I only wear it if I’m doing something outside. Most days I only see ~1 minute of sun when I walk across the street to work. It’s usually dark when I come home (mmm 12-hours work days.) Twice a week I walk to the street corner to buy lunch from a food cart, but that’s only ~5 minutes.
b) male
I wear sunscreen if I plan to be out in the sun for awhile, slather it on everywhere I am not covered. Face included.
I need to find a moisturizer with sunscreen actually, mine doesnt have it and it’s the only one I’ve found that I like for my face. It’s not too greasy or anything.
I use Oil of Olay’s Complete (fragrence free) with an SPF of 15 every day, plus a makeup with an SPF of 20 most days (but the makeup only goes on my eyes and t-zone, so it isn’t as useful). It feels just like a regular non-greasy moisturizer to me.
Female. My boyfriend does the same, though (minus the makeup), plus he uses a SPF 45 everywhere when he is going to be in the sun.
Would the OP mind amending the list to:
a. If you usually use sunscreen on your face during the sunniest months where you live.
b. Your gender c. the brand and type you use
I use the same product for daily moisturizing/sunblocking. I apply it in the morning, and then again if have to wash my face, since its not waterproof. My (male) SO uses Nivea for Men Moisturizer with SPF 15. We are both redheads with fair-to-medium complexion.
For being-in-the-outdoors sunblocking needs I use Coppertone Sport waterproof, sweatproof, slideproof spray-on sunblocking product, SPF 30. It works well without being slimy. I avoid the sun in the sense of having no interest in tanning, but I work outdoors so I’m in the sun a lot… end result, I have a mean farmer’s tan.
If I’m going to be in the sun for more than a couple hours (skiing, golfing) then I do. Otherwise, no. I get a fairly decent tan on my arms and face and legs during the summer.
My untanned skin on my torso will burn in 30 minutes untreated.
Right now my face is peeling from a bad sunburn last weekend. It was drizzling when I took my daughter to her soccer tournament but it burned off and became sunny. 4 hours and I was red as a beet.
I am female and very pale. I use a SPF 45 on my face everyday. I think it’s by Coppertone, and it’s an oil-free kind that doesn’t make me greasy or break out.
Even in the winter if I don’t put it on, I get very bad “heat headaches” that go away if I use sunscreen. I also usually put SPF 50 on my arms and exposed chest area because I do quite a bit of walking outside everyday. My skin is probably already ruined from the insane sunburns I would always get in my childhood, but I like to think I’m helping stave off problems.
I’d just like to point out for those that don’t care for sunscreen, the smell, the feel of it, etc, that if you google on sun protective clothing you will find a number of sites that offer clothing, hats, etc. that can protect you from the sun while keeping you cool.
It’s a little pricey but I think if a you purchased a couple of basic items it would be very useful.
Skin cancer is just no darn fun. I’ve watched my former FIL get chunks taken out of his nose, face, ears and neck over the years. It’s not pretty and it’s probably quite a bit more expensive than the special clothing and more uncomfortable than putting on lotion.
Female, pale ivory skin. Nope. I’m religious about using it if I’m going to be out in the sun doing something, but for normal weekday workdays, I never put it on. I work in an office, so unless I go outside after work, the only exposure I get is in the car and the brief walk to the office and to the house. And after work, it’s after the death hours of 10 - 4, so I don’t bother. I’ll stay in the shade.
If I’ll be out in the sun however, on it goes. Absolutely.
When I wear sunscreen, I generally use the Sport sunscreen (by Coppertone? Dunno - the blue bottle). I try to buy higher SPFs (I recently bought a 60! Huzzah!), but they always seem greasier and heavier than the Sport that’s only 30. (Yes, I know - higher SPFs don’t really do much but make me feel better.) I think they’re usually Coppertone. Tho’ I’m religious about it, I do hate their greasiness and heaviness and general dirty feeling you get when you put 'em on.
Gotta find me some of these sunscreen-fortified moisturizers, so I’m interested in brands too. Keep 'em coming.
Male, and described by my own mother as having “The skin tone of a fresh cadaver”. Don’t try to apply logic to that statement, but it conveys the pale-thing.
When I’m going to be outside for more than an hour, I’ll give myself a spray with the Coppertone 30spf “sports” version. If I’m out there to play soccer or tennis, then I’m definitely spraying, then rubbing it in, and then spraying again.
Day-to-day, no. I am far to lazy to apply stuff every morning. If I were a woman, I’d be the one without any makeup and non-conditioned hair.
I try to consistantly use sunscreen, since a sunburned face is no fun, and to keep my youthful looks. I use a SPF of at least 30, and make sure that the lotion is sweat and water resistant. (I wear contacts, and sweat dripping suncreen into my eyes is no fun.)
Too bad most of the water and sweat resistant ones feel like I’m rubbing lard on my face… I have a nice regular lotion with sunscreen (SPF 15) that I use as my ‘daily’ lotion for ams/legs/etc. that soaks in quickly, is nice and light, etc., but because it’s not sweat resistant I can’t wear it on my face. Grrr.
<< SysAdmins can’t be sued for malpractice but surgeons don’t have to deal with patients who install new versions of their own innards. >>
I’m female. I use it every day, year-round. Both my moisturizer and foundation contain it. I’m fair-skinned enough that DH says if we ever get stark white sheets, he’ll only be able to find me by my dark hair. I thought he was kidding til I saw my passport photo against the white background - good thing I was wearing a dark shirt that day, or all you’d be able to see of me is my lipstick and hair.
Female, and I’m very pale and burn extremely easily. For example, I just recently got a very deep tan WHILE wearing 30 SPF.
I don’t wear sunblock between, say, October and April (in Montreal). If I’m going to be outside for more than 3 minutes between the hours of 9 and 3, I apply 45 to my face and 30 to the rest of me. This happens, sadly, not very often. I bike to and from work without sunblock at 7 am and 4:30 pm.
Female, very pale. I try to use sunblock every day, but I admit that occasionally I space out and forget. And I’m much more lax about it in the winter. How much time do you think I spend outside in a Chicago winter? Not so much. I use Clinique SPF 25 for my face and some SPF 35 I picked up at Trader Joe’s for arms and shoulders.
I have to remember to put sunblock on my feet. I’ve developed lines on my feet from my favorite flipflops. Even the littlest amount of tanning freaks me out. Skin cancer runs in my family.
I am male and have very pale skin. When I was a teenager I used to swim competitively and had a bit of a tan but sometimes got burned. When I was about 16 I decided that the whole process of tanning was pointless and despite social pressure began to actively avoid the sun. Since then I generally cover up as much as possible, wear sunscreen and a brimmed hat if out long. I can spend all day playing cricket without showing any hint that I have been outdoors (except for the dehydration maybe).
