I was reminded of this by the exchange about correcting the pronunciation of peoples’ names in another thread.

You meet an Australian woman named Amber. She insists her name is supposed to be pronounced “Ambah” – the ‘r’ is supposed to be silent. (Something that actually happened to me). Choose the answer closest to how you’d feel.

  • Fine. If that’s how she wants people to pronounce her name then good for her.
  • I’d politely comply with her request, but I’d secretly be thinking she’s just making everyone pronounce her name in an Australian accent.
  • You can’t make me speak Australian! I’ll pronounce the ‘r’ with my American accent.
